What's She Worth

I've got the opportunity to buy a 1968 191 to use as my fly fishing boat. She has a new floor and transom work has been done. Going to be powered with a 2003 Honda 90. The owner claims that he's got $4000.00 into the work that has already been done. He's asking $8000.00 for the boat motor and trailer. The trailer is usable.
Is if that motor is large enough to push the boat into the mid 30 range? What other expenses should I plan on? Any thoughts on the price of the hull?

Sounds kinda high for todays market. From the pictures it looks like the boat is still in the process of being restored. If it was totally done, running, and ready to fish maybe. But seems kinda steep to me. Of course thats just me. I could be wrong.

Thanks for the responses. I thought so too. I know that he paid $500.00 for the hull and trailer a few years ago. The 90hp books for about $3000.00. The motor, controls and CC are going to be installed by the dealer where he bought the motor, so it will be 'ready' to fish. He claims to have 4K into the floor and transom. Any ideas on what would the hull itself be worth? I've always owned newer boats, but this hull intrigues me and would really fit the bill for fly fishing the inland lakes around here, and maybe some nearshore salt. What does a typical minimal restoration cost (remove the front rail, minor glass work and a new paint job)? I think I'd eventually remove all the wood components and replace the CC and leaning post as well.

I can imagine if you have a shop do the work you can rack up the cost pretty quick - so maybe he does have that much in it including motor. Hondas ain't cheap.
It's worth what you're willing to pay, the saying goes. If it looks good and is solid all around, go for it.

the value of that rig is in the motor only,the trailer is worth maybe a couple of hundred,the hull is worth whatever its worth to you.restoring a classic gives you a sense of pride,but you can never expect to get your money back out of it.my .02

Thanks guys, really appreciate the input. I had a '65 Mustang that I spent a lot of time (and money) on and she became my baby. I wish I never got rid of that car. I'm thinking this might be similar. If I bite the bullet you'll see me around here a lot! I'm think I'm going to offer him $4K with hopes I can get it for $5K. I'm going to wait until he gets the motor mounted and take it for a ride. I'm hoping that motor will push it mid 30's. I can do some of the work myself and beg, borrow and steal to get the rest done. Any idea what a full paint job would run?
She will definitely need a
green
rubrail! Count me in for 50' if I get the boat.
Any other thoughts and/or comments would be appreciated.

The boat actually looks to be in very nice shape for a 68` and still being the original configuration. I agree with the earlier thinking that we probably will not see a decent ROI after our rebuilds. But show me any boat that you can actually make money on unless you really steal it. If the Honda is nice, floor solid and has documented rebuild work. I would go $6K. A 68` is a rare classic indeed. I`m starting to see the 22-2 rebuilds all customized with towers and porta brackets and livewell systems going for $29K-$45K. Of course these are asking prices. I would really like to see a restored original as the day it was shipped from the factory and what it would sell for. With very minor modifications my intention is bring my 22-2 back to original showroom condition with using todays materials.
