Gas Cap?
« on: July 29, 2010, 05:31:19 AM »
I thought this was a stupid question, but maybe not...

I lost the gas cap on my 19-6 recently.  I went to order another one, and there's several sizes to choose from.  Does anyone know what size/where to order the correct gas cap for a 73' 19-6?

Thanks  :salut:

I had a slightly different problem, the cap that was on my 1995 175 Osprey when I bought it was cross threaded. I went through 2 Perko replacement caps that didn't fit properly and finally ordered a locking cap complete with fill tube from Overtons.

measure the threaded opening, go to West, look at a few, take back the one/s that don't fit, or replace the entire fill fitting with a new modern one?  I doubt there is a spec on that old of a boat?? Just what I would do...

Sorry, Jessie, without looking at it...can you post a pic of just the fill?  That will get us started...

I have heard that there isn't a standard thread size for filler caps.  So getting one to match can be difficult.  I think flounders suggestion is your only option.  Buy what you can and see if one fits...  if not replace the entire filler neck.  Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions guys

I am currently between homes. My boat is being stored several miles away from me and going back to measure the opening then buying possible caps is a tad inconvenient, but if that's what needs to be done then it can be.  I'm worried about moisture getting in, though the boat is covered and I have the filler hose temporarily plugged with a plastic bag at the moment.

I recently replaced the filler hose, and let me tell you, due to the hole size in the gunwale for the filler hose (barely a bigger diameter than the hose itself) and the overhang of the gunwale around the area, you almost had to be double jointed to get a hose clamp around the hose after you install a new filler neck.  If you drop a tool or a hose clamp, which I've done, it has a new home in the boat.  I'd really like to avoid installing one again (I've done it twice now   ).

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could someone with a convenient, same circa 19-6 measure the diameter and TPI (threads per inch) of their gas cap and let me know?  Thanks for the help everyone   :salut:
