Osprey 200 Fuel tank clean out
« on: June 28, 2010, 10:56:23 AM »
I have an Osprey 200 that has been sitting for 18 months with about 15 gallons of fuel in the tank.  My plan is to add some stabil and trailer the boat down a bumpy road to mix things up and then pump it out.  ( I know gas is dabgerous to work with and have an appropriate pump).  Is the tank shaped in such a way that I will be able to suck it oretty dry or will I need to run add 5 gallon of fuel a couple of more times to really get the crud out?

If ayone has ony other ideas that don't involve removing the tank I am all ears.

I wouldn't bother putting the stabil in first. I think that would be just wasting it. Make sure and lift the front of the trailer up as high as you can, normally the pickup is in the rear of the tank. Then flush like you said and that should get a lot of it out. Myself I would drain it then put a couple of gallons in  and drive it around, then pump that out. Make sure and pump fresh through the line using the bulb to flush it and the pickup also. Stabil I don't think will dissolve varnish I think it just keeps it from forming. I hate to say it but if you want to melt the varnish some type of alcohol product usually works best.

I have a couple of questions for ya.  Was it ethanol or non ethanol fuel?  Was it premixed two stroke or not?  If it was non ethanol premixed two stroke it may not be that bad.  Disconnect your fuel line from your engine and pump some out into a jar using the primer bulb.  See how it looks and smells.  Also look for water in the fuel.  If it's ethanol then I'm sure it's bad and it may have phase separated on ya so git rid of that.  If the fuel that you get out of the tank looks ok and doesn't smell like varnish than I wouldn't think the tank is going to in bad shape.  If it looks nasty and stinks like varnish then yes you have some gunk in there.  I have found that ethanol fuel does a great job of lifting off any gunk that has settled into any fuel system.  (ask me how I have found this out).  Good luck!

It is unmixed ethanol.
