overturned 1972 196
« on: June 15, 2010, 04:54:02 PM »
Has anybody had their 196 (1972)  overturned while on the mooring.  That happened to mine today.  There was no wind and flat as can be.

I am in Narragansett Bay and not far from shipping channel.  I just bought the boat and it has been working very nicely for the last 3 weeks and then this happened.

Something happened that you are not aware of. Boats dont capsize for no reason.

salvage guy claims I took a wave over the transom.  Hard to believe since there was no wind etc.etc.  Boat is upright and the bills are just starting.

Anyone around that can bear witness?  Any LEOs in the area at the time that you can talk to?  I mean, like bump said, boats just don't capsize because they are having a bad day...

My neighbor saw it at 8:30am on his way to the Marina and at 11:30 on his return trip it was over.   Something had to hit it, that is all I can think.  Could the bilge pump fail (I was on it Sunday and the bilge was empty and working) and make the boat stern heavy?

Really hard to believe it could be a wave, but I will get a report from the harbormaster what ships where in the channel at the time.

If something hit a 20ft Aquasport hard enough to flip it over, trust me on this, IT LEFT A BIG GOD DAM MARK

Just so everyone understand my dilemma, I receive this news when I landed in CA this morning, so I am operating on a lot of hearsay information.

As you know, you have friends here, and when it comes to our Aquasports, we hang together. How is the salvage guy involved? They are ambulance-chasers.  Maritime Law (i.e, recovery) takes precedence in most states, tell him you don't need him any longer. GET RID of him.

Know you're on a biz trip/etc.,.... but get a friend to go pull the boat, put it on the ramp, ASAP. Don't let the salvage boys get their hooks in it. If they get hold of it, you may get it back, maybe not....for whatever they can screw you for, they'll do their best to eat you alive.

Have witnessed a lot of nightmares involving salvage. Act quickly, do your best, and keep us posted.

Something ain't right here...

Contact the local PD or Sheriff's Dept.  Just to let them know what has happened and get it on record.  Even BIG A$$ WAKES don't capsize boats!  At least not while they are moored...

And what Scott said, get someone to take care of this for you, not the salvage rats... :x

The Habormaster is part of the police department, he was first on the scene and called the salvage company.  Salvage company is quoting $100 a foot.  Plus I have to have the engine cleaned up also.

Does that price sound reasonable?

So what is the explanation?  I, mean, c'mon...or is there something we're not getting here...

If a "rogue wave" or a tidal wave, or an extremely large wake entered the Marina, certainly other boats would have been affected, and even if they weren't, the marina where you moor has to have in it's agreement with you a clause about safe mooring and safe passage...

Kinda handy that the PD is also the Harbor Master...
