Had a great nite last night after catching a bunch of muttons, vermilions and yellow tail we were comming in lost power and ran aground. The lower unit has a dent right on the noise cone couldn't get motor out of gear to start it.2 guys saved us helped get us off rocks and towed use in to the ramp( God bless them)The hull is fine the gear case is F--- I mean messed up.I going to take a look later.Anyone know were I can get a good gear case with breaking the bank let me know. After I fix that I can figure out how come I lost power in the first place.Like I said we had a great nite.

I havent been out hillsborough in a few years but i do remember some freakin awesome rockpiles on the north side. I guess its a worse feeling knowing they are there and you are powerless to stop the damage

Try Gulf Coast Marine Power in Bradenton Fl, 941-708-0393.  He has parts to motors every where in his shop and if he doesn't have it he can point you in the right direction.

He normally doesn't answer the phone.  Leave a message with motor info and what your looking for and he's pretty good at calling back.

I called him after posting this and left a message.  Will let you know.

Shorts

He does possibly have one, pm me.

Replacing the lower unit would cost around $500 to $900 and the motor is a 25 year old Johnson 175.I don't like the idea of having that boat sit until I can re-power it.But putting alot of money(i don't have ) into that motor seem like a wast.I would like to put a 4 stroke 150 on it.I think that would be fine for me and save a lot of gas.If I can take not fishing without going nuts just have to get some info and pinch more pennies.

How do you know you need a new gear case. Is it cracked, leaking, skeg broken or just a dent.  If it were me.  I would get a manual on the engine, pull the lower unit and see whats up with it inside and see if you can save what you have.  I am not suggesting bandaging something together.  But, know what you have before you assume all is lost.  Engines are expensive and the knowledge you gain could save you some major bucks down the road.  If you want to bring it to Lakeland I would be happy to pull it apart for ya.

If the gearcase is toast then the SEI aftermarket gearcase may be a good option. You cant beat the warranty. A good used gearcase will run $400-$500 bucks or a new replacement for $795 with a 3 year warranty! OEM Replacement $2700.? You can buy a lot of fuel for a $8000. motor payment. The bigger issue is why you lost power; was she hot, fuel issue, trying to seize up, etc, etc. Maybe look at the whole issue before you go to the bank. The motor is worth the sum of its parts being an 85`.The trim system and a new gearcase are worth $1500 in pieces. Just another spin on this...

There is a large roller/thrust bearing right in the nose of the gearcase that may have gotten the bang. You are going to need some stout snap ring pliers to remove the big snap ring holding the bearing carrier in place once you remove the four screws, then you should be able (with a puller) to pull the carrier, reverse gear assembly and propshaft for a closer look. The pinion gear and nut will have to be removed to gain access to the forward gear and bearing assembly.

I got the lower unit off and apart, the reverse gear was missing a tooth or two and the clutch dog was in parts. The price went down alittle so thats good news and I can start the motor now with a hose.I started her sunday and she ran fine for about 5 min.then it started missing this is with fresh gas.It would miss then run fine then start missing again I will start looking in to this problem next weekend any thoughts would help.
Thanks
