Nope, Bump, it's actually a way of slicing.  Most folks cut a tomato north to south - that would be horizontal cuts if you picture the 'mater hanging on the vine.  But, according to family lore, they taste better cut east to west, or vertical from one side to the other, and you discard or munch the end pieces that are mostly skin.   :thumleft:  I don't really know if it makes any difference or not, I just remember mom saying "east to west is best" when she would cut 'maters for sandwiches.   :scratch:
 
It is probably from the same lore as the left-handed ball peen hammer, the bacon stretcher, and the turbo embumulater.   :tongue:

It takes a long time to master holding the 'mater as it would be on the vine so you can cut it E-W and have usable slices though.  I have it down pat now. :thumleft:
