New project 19-1
« on: May 25, 2010, 09:06:00 AM »
Hi guys I was looking to get a 20' Proline flatback and had a friend tell me about this forum and after checking it out I'm hooked and found an Aquasport instead.  The guy that I bought it from said that it is a 19-1 and that they made this model for only three years but after looking at this site and Rick's info on the old brocheurs it seems that maybe they only made these in 1971.  But I'm still unsure.  Also he said that this is a flat back but when I look at the back of a 22-2 it looks a lot flatter than mine but the paper work says they both draft the same depth.  After thumbing through everybody's projects it looks like I made the right decision and have seen some awesome finished products.  So my wife and I are very excited about starting and feel comfortable knowing that so many others started out just like us and now have a swan of a vessel.
Now that we have it sitting in the yard we're thinking maybe to flip the boat upside down and beginning the work on the bottom. there's a few deep scuff marks on the keel down towards the back.  They're not to bad but on the nose it looks like maybe he hit the trailer a few times and tried to patch it and didn't know to come to Classic Aquasports to get pointers.  So while its flipped i'll patch this and sand all the bottom paint off.  Maybe even spray primer while it's flipped?  If this is a bad idea please pull me back from the edge.

This is my first attempt at photos fingers crossed

Transom seems pretty strong and already built up so this might save some time and money

He built these knees into the deck and not the stringers thinking I'll cut the knees off the transom and make new ones?

The inside edge of the cap is rounded

I sure l;ike the shape of the aquasports

Well that's my boat. I look forward to hearing your thoughts about this boat.

I've got the same hull, mine was built in 1970, love the lines.  Looks like someone already went through & replaced your stringers are they in decent shape?
You're right about it not being a flat back, it's a modified V, personally I like it better but we've all got opinions.  If I ever get around to putting some pics of mine up you'll see what yours probably looked like at one time, I'm in the middle of reconstructing so you can see all the good stuff.  You've got a lot of work to do inside the boat, make sure you support the hull a little better before you tear into any stringers so it doesn't flex.
One thing I'd be concerned about is putting an outboard bracket on a 19' boat.  Every one I've seen makes the back end of the boat ride too low, it beats the snot out of ya at low speeds.

^ i would say build a cradle under it, and then go through all the inside structure (stringers, transom, etc.) and gte all of that solid, and put a floor back in it before you flip it and start on the bottom...  i see alot of nasty plywood in there thats probably gonna need replacing.

you are right dirtwheelsfl,
Focus on the major issues relevent to the super structure. It looks like someone had the closed transom idea. On a 19 footer, I would really think twice about  the bracket idea on this boat. The original transom worked well without a giant outboard bolted on. I would consider going deep into the whole superstructure, roughing her up like the top of a Remora`s head and doing some major glass work back to original, bolt on a 115 and love life...

I think this is a 191 too but the listing says 197 and it say 1968 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170490606486&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:MOTORS:1123 - has the same "pad" in the bottom of the hull in the back middle.

I love the lines of that boat.

Thanks alot dirtwheelsFl for the info on flipping the boat.  My wife and I were ready to rally up some muscle to flip it.  So you think maybe we should sure it up more than just having the blocks under it?

I was looking at the pics of the 19-1 that Rickk posted and it seems that I definately don't have the original cap.  I wondering if I need to start looking out for an original cap or will I be able to build a custom cap that looks good.  I know of a 20' proline for sale in the area would it be worth buying that and pulling that cap for my boat?  They seem to be pretty similar.  Also I was looking at that casting platform(still talking about the pics Rickk posted) and it is big was that the way they made them then.  Looks to me like it is touching the console.

if you're gonna rebuild the inner structures/stringers then you need to hold the hulls shape better than just having blocks at the corners.

Are you sure your cap isn't original?  Looks about the same as mine, other than yours has some kind of raised pad above the anchor locker, and the extra reinforcements at the front half, and the boxes in the back.  I wouldn't mess with the ProLine cap, it's not gonna be an exact fit, would be less work to get yours cleaned up if it's in decent shape.

The casting platform picture is decieving, it's actually the same size as other 19's, but most 19-1's have the console mounted so far forward they're intruding into the platform about 8 inches.  Leaves a nice big open area at the back of the boat.

Thanks for the info dbiscayne.  There's a ton of room in the back of that 19-1.  Is that your 19-1?  Did you leave that much room in the rear when you were finished?  I'd love to see some photos of it.  It looked like in the last picture that there was the original stringers.  That's pretty cool.  I've heard that the way Aquasport made their stringers made it nice to redo, just remove the old foam and replace with new.
