The trouble with skoots!
« on: May 20, 2010, 05:02:36 PM »
Well we tried to make it! Skoot and myself had set it up to meet at the rest area at the north end of the sunshine skyway bridge south of St. Pete. My wife and I got there the morning of the 15th and waited for skoot to get there. He called and said he was on the way and would be there  soon. Then my phone rang again and he said he had stopped to get air in the trailer tires and one of his hubs was really hot. I told him to find a parts store and call me back when he got there and we would drive back up to help him fix it. Got to the carquest that he had found and took everything apart to find the bearings were about to come out of the cages. The races were also very scored so I changed those out as well. Once I got it all back together I went inside the store to clean up. When I came back out he had jacked the other rim up and was spinning it and it sounded terrible too! He proceeded to jack the other the other two rims up and they were screwed up as well. We talked about options and I said we don't want to get stuck out on the side of the skyway changing the other ones out so we decided to just put in at War Memorial park and fish Boca Ciega bay. Arrived to the ramp and got the time capsule in the water and took off  into the bay. Well, we went about 45 seconds and suddenly we start slowing down. Skoot says "I'm not doing that!". Great!!!      We looked back at the motor and the bulb had collapsed! Wonderful! Anyway we never did get it running right actually he is still working on it and its still not right. Don't forget he just replaced everything in the fuel system(Tank,Lines, Filter, I mean everything)
So we putted around the bay and did some drifts for trout or what ever else was around across the flats. I just want to thank skoot for a wonderful day out in the boat! He kept trying everything he could think of to make it run but there was just too much adversity.
Thank you skoot !
Here are some pics from our day out. This is my wife and skoot tied up at the park. Check out the canvas it is original! Hell its still shiny!

And the proud papa! Man what a cool boat! The condition is absolutely amazing!

We did get it running for about 5 minutes before it died again so here is a vid of a ride in the Time Capsule!

So the saga continued! On Friday the 21st the wife and myself and my college friend(who had the day off) went fishing out on Redington Shores long pier. Man that thing is a fish magnet. You could literally drop your sabiki in and have it loaded with whitebait or threadies in about two seconds. We stayed there for about three hours and caught crevalle, black sea bass, spanish, small mangos, continuously the whole time. So about 1 o'clock my phone rang and it was skoot. He asks what we are doing which I told him and he says those fateful words again "Do you want to go ride in  the boat again?" Heck yeah! My friend had dropped his car off for some maintenance so he had to go return the loaner and couldn't go. We decided to meet at War memorial park again which we did about 3. That morning skoot had put in at Lake Seminole and decarbed the motor and he said it was running great with the addition of a new bulb. We met and went out into the bay, man what a difference! Of course I forgot to tell you we were running on the portable tank because he still can't get it to pull fuel up out of the new tank. So we head out towards Johns Pass with the intention of at least making it out into the gulf which earlier had been really slick. If you haven't seen johns pass lately, right now they are building the new bridge and the pass is down to about a 25 ft gap when passing under the bridge. So we run through it and out. Well it wasn't very flat anymore! 2 to 3s with a 4 thrown in. Of course skoot can't stand it and wants to see what it'll do. Hang on boys and girls! What a ride! That little hull rides so good it will just eat that short chop up! The only issue was it wasn't just me and skoot , the wives were on the front console seat and they were getting slammed sitting down. We turned around and headed back in with the following sea it was a great ride. We got back in the bay and rode down into marina terrace and on the way back after running great until then it started running bad again. Still can't figure it out but skoot is working on it. ANY IDEAS?
I want to thank Scott again for all the effort and the invite and ride, it was a blast!
So here are some more pics of our day on the time capsule.

Skoot unloading.

Yes thats me driving!

Back at the ramp, what a cool boat!

One man loading with a 20 ft boat, how easy is that?

THANKS SCOTT!!!

Lewis,
LOVE THE SOMBRERO!  I guess you Georgia boys have to wear those things...

So Scott still has fuel delivery issues.  Since he changed between the main tank and the portable, it's starting to sound more like an engine problem...but it doesn't show up for a while.  When was the last time he changed his plugs...or checked them for condition?

I still think its something to do with the pickup tube in the tank. On the way back the other day we anchored up and he cleaned the filter on the motor after that it ran better. Still looking for an easier answer that doesn't involve pulling the hatch. He doesn't have a pie plate over the pickup, just the clear sight plate just behind the console.

About the hat I've been wearing that columbia flats hat for 20 years and it just won't die! I still like the way it keeps the sun off my ears and most of my neck. Before they got popular I really used to get stared at, OH, maybe it wasn't the hat!

Hey, I LIKE that hat. And glad you boys hooked up. That's a heckuva ride. Skoot, as is said here in the south, you done good.

Am sure the fuel delivery prob. is a simple one....as the boys have already mentioned, ck. the vent line ...also, ck. the hose, may need to upgrade to the larger size hose. Could be the fuel pump, but doubt it, as she was a ball o' fire with the aux. tank. And as Lew stated, could be the pick-up....needs to be tight to the tank (not sucking air)   but not bottomed out....could be its too long, and won't pick up freely, in quantity....something simple at this point, no worries.

Awesome boat, great trip, thanks for sharing.

Your very welcome my friend. Even with ALL the little issues I still had good time, it was nice to finally meet you guys. We'll do again, for sure!

Ok, here's the deal with the fuel.  When I hook up the NEW fuel tank, lines, filter and bulb the engine is starved for fuel.  Even when idling the primer bulb goes flat and the engine stalls out.  I even tried opening the fill cap in case it was a vent issue, but no luck. So now at this point I cant run or idle on the New tank, the bulb goes flat.

After I Decarbed(using Dunks method) and changing the plugs I hooked up a 6 gallon tank and ran the boat a little over 1 hour while varying speeds.  It ran very well. It did hick-up a few times, but nothing major. (could be the carbs)  Later that day I went out with Lewis and we ran again for about another hour with no issues. Then it started sputtering again.  I checked the primer bulb and it was still hard.  So, now im really confused.

Heres the break down.
New fuel tank - The primer bulb will go flat and the engine will die while in neutral at the dock.

Auxiliary tank- Motor runs well at all speeds, but spits and sputters occasionally.

Hi Skoot,
Probably two separate issues. Years ago, I worked for a dealer who sold sportcraft boats, we had a brand new rig doing the same thing from its first tank of fuel. It turned out that that when the manufacturer sealed the sending unit in place; the excess sealer squeezed out of the mounting plate and fell into the tank. We pulled out the fuel pick up and it was completely clogged with silcone balls of sealer. That cured the problem. Have you tried removing the fuel line on the inlet side of the primer bulb and blowing in the line to see if there is any resistance or having someone listen to the vent or open fuel cap for bubbles or air escaping? Something has the pick up tube plugged.

Fitz, yes I unhooked the line so it was a direct connection to the tank and I could not blow or siphon fuel from the main line.  Its defiantly a thought that something is clogged or stuck in that pick-up.

I forgot to tell you guys this: When I went to prime the fuel for the first time, I had the hatch open and the tank exposed. When I pressed and released the primer bulb the pick-up valve on the tank made a strange hissing sound (while pressing the bulb) and squealing sound(while releasing the bulb). Thats the best way i can describe it.  It concerned me but, when I ran the boat in the driveway it seemed fine with no noise coming from the pick-up.

I listened again over the weekend and the same squealing/hissing noise is happening when the primer bulb is pressed.

Is there some kind of flapper or ball valve on the inside of pick-up tube that could be stuck?

Its that damn anti syphon valve. Its a check ball the spring thats in the threaded square block that connects your fuel line to the hose barb and into the to the tank. Thats the only thing the could cause that kind of restriction if you have varified that the lines and pick up are clear. I was thinking it could also be the pipethread on the same square block sucking air, but you would lose prime but that would not make the bulb go flat.

Scott,
When Lewis called me the other day when you guys were heading out, I told him to tell you to go to Worst and pick up a non-anti-siphon barb.  The tank manufacturers have to ship the tank with an anti-siphon barb in the pickup because they don't know if the tank is going to be used for an O/B, which doesn't require one, or an I/O, which does.  Here's what you need at Worst, hey, only $4!  Sierra 3/8" Fuel Barb

Well fitz, it was that damn anti-siphon valve. I pulled that sucker off last night.  Must have been defective from the start.  I could not push, pull or drag anything through that thing. It was completely stuck.  So tonight Im going to install a regular 3/8" hose barb and hopefully take her for a test run. (if I have time)

Thanks guys for all the help, I'll let you know how it turns out :salut:
