Water in the wiring tube in the Bilge area of my 225 Explore

HI Folks,
Another question on my 2004 225 Explorer.

When I open the Battery access hatch and look down to the left where all the wires go to the front of the boat.  There seems to be a well that constantly collects with water and it stinks.  What is causing this pool of water and how can I get rid of it.

The source could be any number of things.  Trim Tabs, underside of the rubrail, tackle box/access frame leaking, really don't know.  There is almost always going to be some water in the bilge, the key is to eliminate that "well" so that any water that does get up in that area doesn't collect and start stinking.

A pic of the "well" area may give us a better idea on how to fill it...

Thanks for the response,   I cant fill it for this is where all the wires and hoses run into a 4" conduit up to the front of the boat.  This well is right under the drain hole in the rear of the cockpit,  maybe the drain hole has a small leak in it.

Do these 2 things.  First, reach into the compartment on the lower left and tighten the hose clamps on the cockpit drain hose.  Second, remove the little half-round drain cover and apply a small bead of silicone around the flange of the drain.

In my world of root cause analysis, the only way to understand the failure is to be able to replicate it. Dry the entire area out and begin to work on the suspect entry points with a low pressure garden hose and check each time until you find the likely point of entry, then address it accordingly. Try to simulate the real world activty. Is it filled with river water or wash down water?  I would say if it stinks it might be river water coming in under the rub rail or through a leaky fitting or screw below the waterline. Just try to work from topside to bottom. Its the same principle that is used to find water or wind noise leaks in automobiles.

My 97 has done that since day one,i traced it down to when you wash the deck or it rains the water seeps through that access door,if mine stars to stink i spray some fresh water in there,if you run some ruff water it tends to splash most of it out.

If you wanted to you can get a can of Great Stuff foam gap sealer and fill that valley,i was gonna do that once but life happens and never got to it

My Explorer has a small pond back there. It's like a depression was molded in there on purpose.

My 97 245 Osprey does the very same thing, never gets much in there, just seems to be a collection point, as stated from rain or wasdown that gets through the hatch that is right there??

IIRC, that access door didn't have a gasket around it.  Some good weather-stripping would probably help...

I just purchased a 2000 215 explorer, inboard Volvo v8.  Boat was used in fresh water and had 140 hours on the motor. 

I noticed that after a day on the water (we trailer the boat) that there is about a half to a gallon of sea water that drains out of the bilge.  I pull the plug before washing the boat down.  The hull looks solid and no obvious leaks, but water is getting is from somewhere.

any known problems with this boat?

Look for a water leak in the engine or a through hull connection if so equipped.

I didn't know that an Inboard was made in that model.  Is it an Inboard/Outboard? If so, check the bellows around the hole that the lower unit exits the transom.
