Marc..

The unfortunate price we pay for our dependence, not just here but the rest of the world as well, on oil.  As I type right now, on an Apple Imac, I can't tell you the amount of plastic pieces that make up this computer...all made from oil.  Our boats, our cars, the world as we know it...depends on oil.

So is that to say it is an acceptable risk?  No.  Is it a very possible one, considering the business of extracting oil out of the ground?  Yes...and that's the conumdrum...

But if they're able so send people to the moon, how can't they not make this  safer
This is unreal, and why don't we ear anything in the news about this catastrophic situation

It is big news on TV.  Not much we can do as individuals besides complain and point fingers.  Just hope for the best.

Marc,
The "Loop Current" present in the Gulf will keep the spill in the LA/MS/AL coastal regions, as it flows north.  We won't have any effects here in Tampa Bay.  I'm 45 minutes N of Clearwater...

Then I would guess the outlandish profit's that the oil companies have been recording during the Bush years had better be put to use, and put to use SOON!!!

I just heard the CG said they underestimated the leakage at 1000 gallons a day - they say it's really more like 100,000 gallons a day

That means it will surpass the Exxon Valdez spill in a few days.  And it's in really deep water with no plan on how to fix it.

Let's hope for the best!

I had heard that it was 5 times as bad which put it at 5000/day - now you heard 100k/day
It's weird - they say it had 3 emergency shutoff valves and all 3 failed.  Damn saltwater corrosion

Saw yesterday that the only reason its not leaking more is that a pipe which is lying on the seabed has a kink in in, much like a garden hose in our yard. However, there is sand mixed in with the oil, and the abrasion from the sand with eventually breach the pipe.

If that happens, they're saying the flow could triple.

All of the wildlife is breeding now. The porpoises are birthing their calves.

And the effect on the fishing, shrimping, oystering, estuaries, etc.

Absolutely sickening.

Just think what this whole situation is going to oil prices when the shipping lanes in the Mississippi Delta are blocked with the containment booms! And of course the oil futures speculation markets begin to respond to this. What leaves me with a sickening feeling is that some oil company is going to make billions from this by leveraging an imaginary supply shortage at the expense of a total collapse of a fishing, tourism and livelihoods for thousands of people.  As socialist as this may sound, the Fed should freeze the oil speculation markets until further notice!!

Fitz, great idea,  I don't think thats socialist at all. Look at what the big brokerage houses have been able to "accomplish" with lack of regulation/enforcement. And now you've got Berneke (Goldman) in charge.....blood is thicker than water.

And like you say, they'll manipulate it to their own benefit. They (BP) have a billion plus bill coming their way for cleanup. And again as you point out, look at the lives, livelihoods, damage at stake.....

Thank God we are setting up for the Bermuda High summer wind pattern here in the next couple of weeks which keeps a steady southeast wind flow pattern across Florida. Can you imagine if the winds got this into the Gulfstream loop and carried it into the keys and up the Florida, Georgia, and Carolina coasts! I think Katrina is going to be a sneeze compared to the potential damage from this. My girlfriends nephew works for an Oregon based company that specializes in this cleanup. He is there now and we are trying to get in touch with him to find out what is really happening and will post as soon as I talk to him.

I am not an alarmist by any means but can you say-
$6.50 a gallon for gasoline, I`m sure our OPEC friends will increase production to help us out! LOL
E85, because this will fuel the negitivity towards fossile fuels.
$35 a pound for jumbo shrimp and Oysters that are worth more than the pearls they produce!
I will gladly eat my words if I`m wrong...
