Rebuild 90 hp yamaha

Okay guys , The good old reliable yamaha 90 hp left me and my sweetie stranded on the far side of lake carlton near Mt. Dora fl. We decided to take an evening cocktail cruise from the campground to see all the beautiful homes and sights around the shoreline . Never got over idle speed . At the furthest point from the camp (about 1 1/2 miles) the motor stopped abruptly . An AS 175 is not a canoe . One paddle and an hour and a half later we made it back to the camp dock .( Now seriously considering a trolling motor .) Okay , back to the motor . Top main bearing locked up . major damage to the crankshaft . Don't know the cause , but that's the results . I like the idea of the lightweight 2 stroke and the fuel efficiency , so I'm getting the powerhead rebuilt . Found a guy in Tampa ( PowerheadKit.com) for a reasonable price with good credentials . Total rebuild including new crank , pistons , rebore , bearings ,etc . for about 1600.00 . He will give me a three year warranty on the rebuild ! Parts are full warranty and the labor is prorated after the first year . I hope he is as good as he sounds . Has anybody done business with them or know anything about them ?

Dave and I (I'm the gopher) are starting his rebuild tomorrow - wanna help?  Maybe learn enough to do yours.  That's why I'm all about learning this so in case my motors do the same as your's just did.
I spent that much on the lower unit of the 170s power not too long ago.

Not sure about the guy in Tampa.  I used Chris Carson Marine http://www.chriscarsonmarine.com/ several years ago for a rebuild and the experience was great.  They typically build them a bit tighter than new.  He's way down in Key Largo but he came to my place in Clearwater... pulled the powerhead took it back to his shop, rebuilt it and installed it back on the boat a few weeks later.  He had a sweet F-350 set up for this that was full of powerheads.  He would drive it around the state every few weeks installing powerheads.  At the very least you could get a comparison quote from him.

Thanks for the info , wing . I got impatient and took my powerhead to the Tampa guy already . I hope I made the right decision . Wish I had at least got a quote from your guy . I checked out his website and sure like the idea that he runs the motor after he gets it rebuilt . When I got to Tampa with my motor there was a fella from Marietta ,Ga. there with a 225 omc to rebuild . He told me that it was the 2nd motor that he had brought to this guy for a rebuild and had nothing but praise for him . That gave me a confident feeling . Give me a couple of weeks and I'll let everyone know how it comes out .

HA! I know what you mean!  It sounds like a good shop you took it to.  At least you have a place to go to if there is a problem.  Which I doubt you will have.  Good luck!

Hey Rick , Thanks for the update . I'll try you guys next weekend .

I talked to Dave tonight and he had started to work on the motor to pull the powerhead and get it ready for tomorrow.  He started working on it and pieces of magnets started falling out of the engine cowling and other areas.  So it ends up his motor is not frozen up, the magnets on the flywheel must have started breaking off and something jammed the motor up.  All cylinders look good and have an oily coating to them AND MOVE a little bit as he fiddled with moving the flywheel.  So he needs a new flywheel only - no big workout here now.

Double check that.  On Johnsons you can buy a kit of magnets and epoxy to install them.
