First Time Aquasport Owner 275 Explorer
« on: April 04, 2010, 11:14:48 PM »
I just wanted to say hello to everyone.. I am a first time Aquasport owner as of this past Thursday,4/1. I purchased a used 2000 275 Aquasport Explorer with twin yamaha 200's(238 hrs each).. I am really excited about this boat.. I've been looking for a boat for 2 years now and when I saw this boat, I looked no further.. Anyway, I'll try to post some pics.. I'm having the eisenglass replaced, bottom painted and water pumps replaced. Water pumps could go another year, but this way I'll know and will have a maintenance schedule.. I see a parts forum and will post a few questions there.. Anyway, I'm glad to see an Aquasport forum online..

Isinglass has an interesting history - it's all clear vinyl sheet today, but the name that goes with clear sections of canvas goes way back.  In fact, in the musical Oklahoma, the song about the surry has the line "with Isinglass curtains you can roll right down, in case there's a change in the weather."  But the orginal Isinglass was nothing like vinyl.  It was made of thin sheets of mica sewn into the canvas, so you could see through.  "Isinglass curtains" were offered in horse-drawn carriages and early 20th century cars. A book about a journey in a Model T Ford car describes isinglass curtains as follows:  "Oiled canvas side curtains were put up over the windows for wind, rain, and cold (there were no heaters) and were held in place with rods that fit into the doors and twisting button snaps around the perimeter... 'Isinglass' peepholes in the curtains allowed limited visibility. Isinglass was made of thin sheets of mica."

Interesting we keep the name today for something that is very different from the original.

John,

Thanks for filling us in, I for one really like history. So wonder where the term "Isinglass" derived from, or was referenced to?

Thanks Double Trouble.. I was wondering if you ever replaced any of your factory lettering.. The 275 Explorer is starting to fall off and I wanted to replace it.. I see there is a website that will remake one, www.vinylapproach.com. You don't know the lenght of the current one on you boat do you.. I still have to pick my boat up from the broaker once all the upgrade work is done so I don't have the measurements.. Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks again..

FG,
Hopefully DT can give you the dimensions.  I talked to Wellcraft (AS builders when I was there, and your 275 was built) customer service a couple of weeks ago and they have virtually no AS info that they brought with them when they moved to Michigan.  Just another way for Genmar to let down a boat line that is truly a classic... :x

But that makes finding any little bit of info (like a catalog) so much sweeter for those of us searching. :thumright:

Here are the measurements of the logo
275 is 6" long x 1 1/4" high
EXPLORER is 14" long x 1 1/4 inches high

I think when I do mine I might go 2" high anyway let me know how you make out with yours and the name of the company you use. Let me know if I can help you with anything else and best of luck with the boat.
