Separate idle control
« on: March 23, 2010, 06:59:49 PM »
Never liked the pull the lever for idle adjustment/warm up  on my top mount  controls. Now I have brand new controls that have only shift/throttle . What do you recommend for a separate warm up controls ? I would like something like a knob that you could pull up like a manual choke or similar

Thanks, Marc..

Your new controls don't have a button at the pivot point of the control that puts it in "Neutral mode" and allows you to rev it up?  The one on my 170 you actually pull the shifting/throttle handle away from the binnacle to put it in this mode.  Sure your's doesn't do this

Yep, my old one was the same but not my new one, just shift and throttle, was actually surprised to find one made like that, exactly what I was looking for, all SS construction, very simple design but no warm up way of doing it

A detent.
Here's one for a Morse control. Most JohnyRude controls have them.

Marc,
With single lever/single function controls, there is no "throttle only" button or "pull the lever out" set up.  All those did was allow you to advance the throttle without putting the motor in gear.  Now you have a lever for throttle and a lever for shift...just advance the throttle while not touching the shift!

Marc,
After thinking about this, I see where Bob is going. You must have bought two of these, one for the throttle and one for the shift. Correct?

Bob, Rick, Marc,
Bob, you are correct.  This basically a take-off on a Morse "S" control, which is a single lever/single function control.  You need 2, as Bob said, one for shift, one for throttle.  The detent kit is for the shift control, lets you know when your in neutral.

Typically when you have a single engine boat, and you want to use these controls, you go with the twin binnacle...

No, I just bought one, my plan was to use/have a second device that would act like a warm up lever like you see on side mount controls
My understanding is that one cable controls the shift/throttle (my new toy would be for that)
The second cable controls just the throttle (my second device would be for that, to warm up)
