1986 222 Osprey Rebuild
« on: March 16, 2010, 10:08:40 PM »
I decided to move this over from Discussion to the Rebuilds.  Hope you guys enjoy.

Hello everyone, some of you may remember me from a while back I used to have a 1970 222 that we sold almost 2 years ago(still sore over it).  And I knew I was going to end up owning another one some day and that day was a month ago or so.

I picked up this 86 Osprey and have been playin with it over the last month and I plan on turning it into a fish killing machine like my old one so here it goes:  A few pics of when I got it

A few more with a little progress:

A little back story:  I purchased the boat from a friend of a friend and he had re done the transom before I bought it.  Well as it turns out he only "added" to the transom by building up the original.  It appeared solid as a rock but after a little trimming I found the old transom rotten as the black swamp.  Apparently that is more common than I thought the whole building up original transom thing.

Most of the boat is in excellent shape, the deck and the stringers are good.  And it came with an 80 gallon fuel tank from 99, looks good but it hasn't been tested yet.  I plan on having the tank guy cut it down to about 60g and I will be moving it forward approx. 2.5 feet to offset the weight for my porta bracket.

And a few pics from this morning, I spent about 3.5 hours pulling out wood and grinding and have made more progress but forgot to take pics of it.  I'll save those for next time.  These pics don't do the wetness justice, this is the transom after a week of drying out inside the shop:

And a few more pics after I took the cap off, I still may reuse it but I am heavily leaning toward replacing it.  I know the owner of Egmont boats(hydrophilic design) here in Tampa and he has a gunnel cap mold for this boat with the transom cap and a built in anchor hatch up front.  It is really nice and would make a great addition to any aquasport, I will get some pics of one when I make a template for the arch in my transom.  A few more:

Hey patton if you have to replace the hinges on the front hatches and can find some replacements that match let me know. Did you cut out the front hatch, I see the light cord running in there. I can't wait for the updates. Also mine has the gray gel coat on it did they sand it off or did yours not have it?

Feel free to ask questions/make suggestions.  I know enough about fiberglass to not destroy anything but I am definately no master.  I am working on it at a friends shop so if I have a question about something I can always grab someone, all the cutting and prep work I can handle, it's the glassing part that i'm not 100%.  So when the time for that comes they will be assisting for sure.

Floor is good, the transom not so much.  I have another full day of grinding ahead of me till it's cleaned up.

I saved all the hardware and if I don't re use them I will let you know.  As far as the light cord there is an access plate in the right hatch that I dropped the light through.  There is a ton of room under the deck up there and I probably will end up cutting them out and make one huge storage hatch up front, not sure yet.  The gray gel coat/non skid will all be sanded eventually, going to finish the transom before starting that.

At some point I would like to flip this one over to do the bottom, I remember seeing that on this site somewhere does anyone have the link for it?  Thanks-Patton

Patton,

Darn pretty hull. We've been talking today about the Panga influence, and your hull illustrates it well. Nice boat!

Good deal, you've de-munged the transom. Done the rot-thing many times in different places on my wooden boats. Thought  I'd peeled/dug out the wet-stuff, and was good to go. Take it from me, sometimes the mung is like something from a sci-fi, it just keeps repeating itself. Best advice, dig it all out to you hit dry, put heat-lamps on the rest, let it roast at 150 degrees for a day or two.

Then come back with some West Epoxy on what's left, let it set and solidify. Then the re-build/ glass work/finish/paint.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

One member physically flipped the hull with the help of some friends. I can't find that thread but....

This seems like it accomplishes the same results and you can work when you want.

The white one is an Avenger, and the blue a Dorado.  He's also got the new Avenger hull # 1 inside that thing is sick.

Thanks for the links, I thought about flipping it almost instantly after I took the cap off haha.  I'm not sure if I am going to or not yet but that would make life easy when I start working on the outside.

Is Egmont still in business? The phone number the shop I work for had for them was disconnected... they had us make a switch panel for them but never came to get it, then their phone was disconnected...

They're still around.  Not building boats that I am aware of but building livewells and doing repairs etc.
