vent on bow of explore ?
« on: March 10, 2010, 08:03:09 PM »
Is the vent on the port side of my 05 explore for the fuel tank? or is some other type of vent hose? Its a strange location for a vent so close to the water line .

Dave,
That's your water tank vent, if you have one.  If you have a porta-potti with dockside pump-out, it could also be the built-in holding tank vent.  Would have been nice to put it a little higher though, huh? :?

Take a wiff .....

maybe not...

I have a vent on the port side of my Exp mid ship and it's the fuel fill vent.

You know, I just caught the "on bow" in your subject line - could it be the anchor locker drain you're referring to?

Dave,
I assumed the vent you were referring to was midships.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  All the fuel tanks on the Ospreys/Explorers at that time had the fill/vent on the starboard side.  If this vent is far forward, it would be your anchor locker drain.

As RickK said, PICS, please! :D

it the vent all the way on the front bow, right next to the tip. it must be the anchor drain, i just never seen one like that before, usally they just drain into the bildge no sure if thats a good design or not.

Dave, that is a good design, it lets the water from your rode drain overboard instead of the bilge... :D

Just poke a stiff wire through the hole every now and then to keep it clear of crap...

With all due respect, in terms of design, I feel this is overkill. An overboard drain for an anchor rode? That's 50 to 300 feet of damp 3/8's, it'll dry out before you get back to the dock.

And it basically puts a zit in the upper bow at that position. If rebuilding, I'd pull the tube, fitting, thru-hull, etc.,, and kill any residual rust with acid. Then glass, finish and paint.

Just MHO.

The real question is does your anchor locker drain into the bilge or doesn't it.  When I first got my 230 I was going through everything and I pulled all the anchor rode out of the locker, removed the flap in the cabin and cleaned all the wasp nests out of the locker.  Then I filled it with water to flush it out and it didn't drain anywhere - period. Didn't have a way out  :!:   So I carefully drilled a hole so that it would drain into the bilge.  I didn't think about it going anywhere else until after I saw my buddy Dave's locker drain that does go out the side.  Has a little stainless rear-facing cover/vent on it.  I guess if you do a lot of fishing or diving in 100+ feet of water and anchor while doing it, you've got a lot of rode out (5:1 or 7:1 scope) and if you have a windlass that dumps it straight back into the locker, it could be a lot of water coming back with it that you wouldn't need in your bilge?

I can find no reference to a anchor locker drain in the 05 catalog, I do remember that my buddy's Hydra Sport had one. It too was on the port side.
Seems like a good thing, especially to allow a little air inside when the boat sits for any time.
Does it prevent mildew on the rode?
I don't know but on the CCP, my line stays fairly clean due to the louvered door.

I need to look at mine on the WAC and see if it's like Rick's (no draino). Bet it is.
