Morning

Anyone have a great way to make bilge pump connections.

I have only ONE way to make wire connections in the bilge area.

Butt connectors with heat shrink tubing.

I have never been a fan of butt connectors.  I use a mechanical joint-solder-heat shrink.

Each to his own.

The rub (if you believe such stuff) is that  poor solder welds crack from boat produced vibration.
Poorly crimped butt connections pull apart.

You have good faith in your soldering ability.
I have proper crimping tools.

Six of one, half a dozen of another.

Experience has proven, both work equally well when installed properly. :thumleft:
The heat shrink is a given or neither connection is worth the time it took.

Then there are others that like the pretty colors wire nuts come in and the ease of install.

Thats why I like the mechanical connection.  I did a lot of wiring with an electrician and wire nuts went on for code inspectors, but the joint was already made.  Thats what I use the solder for, just a little extra, but the joint has already been made.  I feel butt connectors are like the "stab" socket on the back of a AC household plug.  To each their own  :D

Wow.... ***

So there are Classic Aquasport members out there in cyber space.

Thanks guys for chiming in.

I'm using butt connectors and either liq. electrical pate
or heat shrink tubing around connector.
I checked on a few connections (Liq.) and even in the hot
sun they look to hold up.

I like the Liq. electrical tape b/c it forms a water/ air tight seal.

Thanks again

Well,
Since mine went on 14 years ago, I guess I should comment. 8)

As I've stated in the past (just too lazy to search my old posts), I started with a solid idea of what I hoped to obtain from installing a full bracket. I feel this is important whenever you make any modification to a boat. If you don't, you set yourself up for disappointment.

My goal was to increase both the usable area in the transom and increase ingress and egress for diving, swimming and skiing/tubing without a noticeable drop in performance.
With the platform in place, I was able to mount my live well on the starboard side, getting in and out has been great for both adults and children and  our Brownie's Third Lung couldn't be easier to maneuver on deck or water. Performance has increased slightly in the best conditions but under loads and rough seas, not decreased one bit.

The platform is 26" in width and with the motor mounted on the lowest settings, is just over 2" higher than in the same position on the stock transom. I guess I could have tried raising it more to see if performance would increase but as stated earlier, I got what I wanted and have been very happy.

I'm with the majority, I like the heat shrink for bilge use....but take it a step further....

"Self-amalgamating electrical tape." I know you guys have seen it, and works really well. Cut (not tear) off a piece, stretch it out a little on the ends, and wrap the entire butt-splice connector. Once wrapped, mash it down well....."melts" into itself.

True love.

Bob, good deal on the bracket, glad you're pleased.

PS...

Bilge 101, keep all connections tight against the underneath cockpit sole, all splices as high as possible. Failed pump, failed float switch, you've at least done all that you can.

My 34 Hatt (on the hill) had a bum float switch mid-ship. And, the stern float switch hung up, twig wedged in. Under shore power. Pump burned up, dead, torrential rain followed (last fall).

Estimated had 30 thousand pounds of water in the hull. Almost came up to the twin 454 Crusaders, but not quite. Took damn near 2 hours to empty her, with a 5000 gph sump pump, 120v.

And bear in mind, she's on the hill. That's actually worse than in the water, because the hull in the water at least has displacement, and not subject to warpage, as on the hill.

Good thing she's an old Hatt, with the one inch plus of hand-laid in the hull bottom. Surveyor says she's fine, but we're lucky. Serious weight, but never leaked a drop. Never even sank the support stands, either. Weird. Thank goodness.

Anyway, keep the connections high... :salut:

Well you asked for it. (bracket feedback)

I'm quite sorry to say
but I still have not had her in the water yet.

I purchased another project (1986 suzuki intruder)
only $450.00.
Yea, that’s correct, I did not omit any zeros.

Anyway, about the boat.

Well this story tells better if I start with....
About the boat trailer.
"MY HEAD"

Yea maybe I should of addressed the 15yr old bearing
that have been sitting prob. since day one.

Yea, she came off...
So with little damage to hull
trailer fender bent to hell tire wedged under hull
and 3 1/2 hrs later back on the road.

So I think it’s pretty evident that I will be doing all of the bearing this week.
I'm hoping to try again next weekend.
But I won't have much time due to working weekends.

Take a look.

Thanks for keeping this post alive.
I will be sure to keep you all updated...

Keep on keeping on.

I have to takes pics of the first trip out.

another gas up pic

look Mom no wheel...
Oh there it is lodged under the hull.
That was a close one.

A stopping motorist gave me this great idea.
It totally worked.
Just enough to keep the axle off the pavement to move off the road to a
safe area to make repairs.
(thanks stranger for the idea)

Good as new... :P

Now lets go get some beer and pretend this never happend.

More posts to come.
I just hope they are on the water next time....

I hope it floats...... :geek:
