88 Evinrude 150 overheating while going slow.
« on: February 20, 2010, 01:45:09 PM »
Hey all,

Ive had the aquasport 20 for about 8 months or so, and just recently it has started to overheat after about 5 min or so of either idle power or very slow movement through the water. One it starts going at a decent pace the temp comes back down. The water intakes are not clogged, and at all times water is coming out of the cooling exit tube at the top. The boat is always flushed after any use.

One thing that i suspect hurt it: I was getting the engine warmed up one day on the trailer before use and i started it/had it run for a min or so before i got hit with the "OH CRAP" feeling, and realized that i hadnt turned the water on to the cooling intakes. :(

Could that of affected anything? What else could i take a look at?

Thanks!

The impeller running without water will be toast in 30 secs from what I hear.  May be time to change out that.

Hey Gotime242,

Glad you mentioned the oops. Sounds like the waterpump is fried. Plan on an impeller, gasket and a new housing insert, since the rubber impeller has tranfered material to the stainless insert. No big deal, the hardest part of the job is disconnecting and reconnecting the shift shaft connection point under the bottom carb. Might be time for new thermostats while you are at it. Just so you know, the motor will still discharge water even if the thermostats are bad because the water source for the tell tale gets its water before the thermostats in the cooling water flow scheme. Should be the four visible gearcase bolts plus one under the trim tab plate to drop the gearcase, assuming no heating of stuck bolts.

And with the motor being an 88 I'd recomend being very careful taking the bolts out of the thermostats one broke bolt and  :puker:  you're in for a long day.  Just went through my 91 140 a few months back like they said reconnecting the shift linkage is fun but IMHO taking the bottom cowl off makes it alot easier :thumleft:

These days they call it the "lower pan".  Have to take them all off on every Suz I rig to hook up shift/throttle cables...

Thanks everyone for the help, i really appreciate it.

Looks like ill be getting the whole water pump "kit" which should have the housing with it just in case. There was a youtube video on it and it seems pretty straight forward...just drop the lower and go from there.

As far as the thermostats...where exactly are they? I took the top cover off and couldnt find any anywhere, so i can only assume as you guys said they are covered by the lower pan/cowls parts. And are there 2 of them?

Thanks again! Sorry for the newbie questions.

Look here.

http://12.2.215.22/pub/default.asp?Sess ... X,ROADSTER

Start at the upper left.
From the drop down box, click on Evinrude, then click "go".
Then the year.
Then the HP.
Then your model (though I'd bet they're all about the same concerning "stats")
Then cylinder/crankcase.
The split screen will give you an exploded view on top with corresponding part #s below.

I don't know your exact model but the theory is the same.
Look at parts starting with # 46.
There will be two, one for each head, located toward the top.
Replace all parts. JohnnyRudes like to run at the right temp on both sides.
A service manual would be very helpful.

Good luck.

Hi

It's easy to change the thermostats, you have to take off the thermostat cover (49 ) take out the old one, and you have inspect the pressure valve seal (47). After cleaning and changing all bad parts you put in the new one and close the cover.
You should descard all seals and put new ones, put some sealant on the covergasket in order to avoid leaking.
Here a link where you can see the crankcase with the thermostat ( Part 52 ), so you can find it on your motor.

Stephen,
Well done!  You have to love it when an owner in Spain chimes in! :thumleft:

Isn't it about midnight over there right now?

Hi

Now its 22:14 here in spain.
I gave my opinion because I know the Rude 155 too well.
Had many issues with it ( water in the gearcase instead of oil, change a piston, overheating, take out the crankshaft for repairing the driveshaft-connection which had fouled away etc. ). It was a good motor for mechanical ( and electrical ) practice.
After all the repair it ran well until I changed the motor for another less thirsty.

and on a side note talked to a guy at racor and he told me to change the water/fuel seperator every 6 months if you use your boat a lot.......

Hi

On my Evinrude 1986 repairs I didn't find any bad bolt, so I think You won't have too many problems taking off the lower part.

Welp, i just got my parts in...an entire water pump kit, couple thermostats and a fuel filter for good measure.

One question: The impeller wheel is a good bit bigger than the housing it seems like it goes in. Is this normal? Does the impeller wheel just flex a bunch to fit in there?

Thanks!

Hi

The  outer diameter of the impeller is biggerthan the housing, that´s normal.
The impeller has to be turned in with the correct rotation direction, it's not easy.
I think it's counterclockwise, but it would be surer to have a look to the old one before.
