Just bought new AS170
« on: February 19, 2010, 06:06:55 PM »
Well its new to me . Its a 1975 that is in showroom condition. Its a fresh water boat , actually a inland barn boat. It looks like its spent its life under a roof. Cant wait to take it out but will need to wait for Lake Michigan to thaw. Does anyone have a feel for the water this thing can safely handle? I currently have been fishing the Great Lake with a 17 ft aluminum Star craft which has lead to some pretty exciting moments.

Welcome aboard polski2  :!:  :!:
You'll find a TON of 170 owners here ready to help with whatever questions you have.  Sounds like you found a gem - we need pics to feel your joy  :bounce:

The 170 is considered an "inshore" boat or at least "near shore".  I've been out 10 miles in mine and I probably won't do that again.     Fog came up, couldn't see 100 yards, no Radar, no GPS (was 20 years ago), was a little scary - compass was "iffy" since I never depended on it for my life before.  Luckily the sun started peaking through the fog, it was morning, so we knew where East was "for sure", at least.  We headed in at a pretty decent clip with all eyes on alert and all of a sudden we exited the fog about 150 yds from shore
Near shore is good, inshore is best for a 170.

Hey Polski, Congrats on the new purchase!

I have a 76' 170 and live in the Chicago area. I use mine quite a bit out on Lake Michigan. The Aquasport 170 may be feel little bit safer because of the beam and depth, but it's still no boat to be out there in snotty weather. You need to play it safe and watch the weather/noaa reports. I won't go if there's NE winds above 10 mph, especially during the summer months when you need to get out to the 120'+ depths.

When you get a chance, please post some pictures. Up hear (proximity to our florida members), it's a rarity to see an Aquasport!

That'll work!

Rick, you could see that one coming a mile away, couldn't you?  Even through the fog... :thumright:

Welcome P2!  The Aquasport 170 will be a lot less exciting in chop than the Starcraft     Just keep an eye on the weather - as you know, Lake Michigan has been too much at times for 600 footers.

A 170 is enough for big water if you're careful - heck, I used to fish the Gulf Stream in a 15 footer, but I guess I'm probably older and questionably smarter now...

Post some pics and hope for an early spring - let's go fishin'!

Good news, it runs as well as it looks. Thanks for the warm welcome to all. I did take a bunch of pics today and my wife is going to help post them. Expecting 6-12 inches of snow tonight so fishing is out of the question. Gonna have to resort to curls. Want to be ready when the time comes, practice practice and more....

Unbelievable! Original 85 Evinrude 1975 model I believe. No trim and tilt, the way they used to be. Original OMC SST propeller, What a find.  Truly a time capsule, sorry Skoot.
