Fuel Sending Unit
« on: February 16, 2010, 08:36:40 AM »
Looking for some advice,

I have a 2002 Aquasport 215DC and have found that the fuel sending unit is totally rusted and corroded and has failed. It is even falling to pieces and the nut holding the pink wire has completely fallen off. What should I use to replace it? I was considering the Teleflex 90424P, if there is a better option that any one knows of please let me know.

Also can't figure out why the thing failed so soon, boat is only 7 years old? Pie hatch seems to be in good shape, it was dirty under there, the o ring looks dried out, but still intact.

I have been getting a gas smell in the passenger side main storage compartment, I am hoping that this fix will resolve that issue.

Any pointers are appreciated, thanks in advance.

Yes, welcome aboard. :salut:

Fuel senders live a terrible life.
Think about it for a moment.

Locked in a compartment subjected to concentrations of solvent and water vapor, constantly wet with both.
Think you could survive for seven (7) years?

Because replacement is an ongoing thing with senders, I'm trying this type.

A little pricey but keeps the exposed elements to a minimum.

Good luck.

Thanks for the input,

bad news the stainless screws holding the sender unit in seem to be seized, I am afraid I am going to strip them. Sprayed some Corrosion X penetration oil on them, still no luck. And with the way the access pie hatch is located the hidden screws if seized are going to be extremely difficult, maybe impossible to remove.

any pointers?

Scrapper,
Don't try and remove the machine screws too soon!  Let them soak for a few days using PB Blaster (good stuff, repeated applications)!  You really don't want the heads breaking off...use a short 5/16" socket on a 1/4" drive ratchet, and if your hands are small/slender enough, put your left hand on the ratchet head while you try to turn it with your right.  These are reguler screws, "righty-tighty", "lefty-loosy".

I just replaced a sender with a standard Moeller swing-arm sender, works fine and only cost about $25 shipped.  WEMA makes senders that have the float that rides on a shaft up and down that we use at Proline, a bit more but I think they work better, as the electronics of the sending unit don't live in the fuel tank, are solid-state and potted. Just depends on what you want to spend.  The WEMA senders are VERY similiar to the one's CB highlighted.  BTW, the new senders come with new machine screws and new gaskets...

A WEMA is what RDS installed on my new tank. (couldn't remember the name).

Are they (RDS) building your PL tanks?

Thanks for all the help, finally got those little buggers out. Nothing like spending half the day on removing 3 screws! Do you guys think I should use gasket sealer around the unit and gasket? Or just the screws?

I'd use this stuff on the screw threads...

Resists attacking from fuel/oils as well as solvents (ethanol)...
