Tach reads too high and does not zero out
« on: February 10, 2010, 02:03:23 PM »
I have a 1995 Evinrude 88 special on a 1995 175 Osprey. My tach stays at about 1,000 RPM after shut off and shows almost 2,000RPM at idle with earmuffs on, somewhat less in the water.

Does anyone know the proper pole setting for this tach?

Thanks,

Bob on Tampa Bay

Is there a 6P setting on the tach, and if so, that appears to be what you need.

Here's more reading that might help.

Thanks.

I'll check the setting as soon as it gets warm enough to make is not too cold and miserable to work on the boat.

It was 44 here this morning. Not my kind of Florida weather:-(

Thanks again,

It got warm enough to take a closer look at my tach.

I have an Evinrude 88SPL but the name on the tach dial is Mercury!

Somebody must have made the switch before I bought the boat.

Any suggestions about why it isn't working correctly?

Should I swap it out for an OMC?

Thanks,

Does it have a 6P position switch on the back?

I don't know, snowbirds are coming and I won't have a chance to check it out until next Wednesday. It's supposed to be warmer then anyway:-)

If it's done for I can pick an Evinrude model up on Ebay for about 50 bucks.

Thanks,
