EPIRB recommendations
« on: November 04, 2009, 12:46:16 PM »
I'm looking to buy an EPIRB for my 25' CCP.  The price ranges are across the board ($300 - $1,300) and I'm not sure what would be the best one for me.  I fish out of West-Central Florida and typically go no further than 25 miles out at locations where there are typically no other boats visible to the naked eye.  Does anyone have any feedback, experiences with brands, know of a place to get a good deal on one.

Any and all feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, I decided on the ACR GlobalFix Pro Cat II epirb for my 25 CCP.  It was between ACR and the McMurdo brand, but the features, price and consumer feedback of the ACR sold me.  Hopefully I will never have to use it.

It's hard to give recommendations on EPIRBs.  Either one never uses it so you never find out if it works or if it doesn't work, you don't come back to tell the tale.  I fish with other people offshore and some have them and some don't.  I bought the little Fast Find 210 to carry in my bag so that I will have one even if the boat owner doesn't.

Don't forget to register it and remember that registrations have to be renewed every two years.

JJ - yes, I thought about that...."too few recommendations due to not using them".  At first I was thinking that not many people had them, but then I realized your point.  I've already registered it and hopefully will never have to use it.
