Ethanol Free Gas in Fort Myers
« on: October 14, 2009, 03:47:58 PM »
Anyone know where this can be found.  I'm sick of having this issue with my boats.

All my boats are trailer boats.

Small world, CThomps!

I too am in Fort Myers, and I too, would like to find a place with Ethanol-free gas.

I've heard that it's a county-by-county regulation, requiring counties in more urban/populated areas to have 10% Ethanol, while rural counties are not required to offer it.  I wonder if gas stations out towards LaBelle have Ethanol...

Which station?  I heard Sunoco and Marathon were the only 2 stations left.
Here is a quote from Wikipedia:
"E10 has also been mandated for use in all standard automobile fuel in the state of Florida by the end of 2010.[25]"
[25]^ Florida E85 Laws and Incentives, U.S. Department of Energy.
Florida E85 Laws and Incentives
"Ethanol Blend Mandate
Beginning December 31, 2010, all gasoline sold or offered for sale in the state by a terminal supplier, importer, blender, or wholesaler must contain 9-10% ethanol by volume (E10). The fuel mandate does not apply to fuel used in aircrafts or watercrafts, fuel sold to a blender, or fuel sold for use in collector vehicles, off-road vehicles, motorcycles, or small engines. If a terminal supplier, importer, blender, or wholesaler is unable to obtain ethanol fuel or E10 at the same or lower price as unblended gasoline, then the covered entity may apply for a waiver.
"
So now we need to find out if all gas at marinas are unblended, since they're not mandated.

I've heard that occasionally upgrading to the 91 or 93 octane gas will help reduce the problems encountered with Ethanol in the Regular 87 gas, but I haven't tried it.
Might try next time I fill up.

If you get the opportunity, ask the fuel supplier if most or all marinas are unblended. Pretty safe bet all his aren't since you are not.

Would be nice to get an industry view.

I actually ment to call Edison Oil today.  They are the big distributor down here.  I'm hoping they can shine a light for me.

The end result may just be that when my boats come back the fuel gets drained and they sit empty until they go out next.

I'm currently on the hunt for a goof gasoline transfer pump.  Whether it be manual or electric.

Good to know - a little pricey but I guess we'll have to pay a premium for what we want.

I went into Maxx's and couldn't find a pump that was marked "recreational" fuel.  Maybe I was looking in the wrong spot?

Not in Fort Myers, but I saw a regular road-side gas station advertising ETHANOL FREE gas last week in Clewiston.  It was a small station on the south side of SR-80, just about a block East of the Walmart.

I went into a huge Shell gas station here in Sarasota (T&T on Palmer - has 32 pumps) yesterday to talk to the owner figuring since his business is down about 60% from the "hay days" AND that he has so many pumps and tanks, he might listen and try to help us/him.  We talked and I learned a lot from the owner in the 1.5 hours I talked with him - he said that there were incentives given the owners of stations to convert everything over and they got a 5% break on the price of blended fuel vs unblended. He told me that Shell was particularly strict on what had to be done - cleaning the tanks (he has 2 or 3 10,000 gal tanks) was the biggest, costing him over 10k to clean one tank.  Shell wanted to make sure there wasn't any varnish in the tanks that were to hold the blended fuel - go figure, so they knew it would eat the varnish off the tanks and suspend it in the fuel.  They also were very strict as to not allow getting any water in the fuel.
He said that he wasn't sure if he could even get non-blended fuel anymore but he was going to check and get back to me.  Real nice friendly guy. Plus a boater too (he also designs and sells aluminum rib boats from there).
I told him that we'd expect to pay a little premium on unblended and that every boater I know would come there to fill up, for sure.  If he advertised, he'd definitely get a lot of new "Big Purchase" business. Plus the tow vehicles would have to be filled up too.
