Another 170 Redo Now With Water!!!

I am not doing a full rebuild on my old AS.  After looking the hull over, it was decided to leave it alone and only paint it.  No soft spots in the floor and the transom is solid is a rock.  Not bad for being a pre 1972!  So after tons of sanding and cleaning the boat was ready for topside paint.  


First went on the two part primer.  It filled in some of the gaps and dings.  It can't work magic though.  I should have done more prep work.


I used a urethane paints sprayed on.  It came out very shiny!!!!  It looks great from about 5 foot.  Perfect for me.  I want a good hard finish paint, that I can get dirty and bloody and not be afraid to use.

I guess I owe him a fishing trip when this thing is done.

Well its a month later and I have little to show for it. I did get the new rub rail on, fuel tank mounted, console set in place and all the gauges set into the console. Also the engine is temporarily mounted, but I think I am going to wait for a jack plate to make it permanent. It sounds better now that I have written this than before. Either way I will try to post more pics tomorrow.

Good job man Looks like the deck was redone previously, there's no lid cover for the fuel thank. What kind of power are putting on her?

Thanks man.  I don't think the deck was redone.  The pre 1972 aquasports didn't have tanks below deck.  But I could be wrong.  It is powered by a 90 hp evinrude.  I hope to have it running by next weekend.

Well I got the engine running this weekend!  I now have my jackplate mounted up.  Its a CMC PL65.  Nice unit.  My steering in place.  Baystar hydraulic, smooth as silk and no stupid cables.  This thing turned out to be a gadget boat.  Oh well.  I thought I liked stuff simple.  
Has anyone on the board run a 170 with a jackplate?  I like to have them to idle around in the shallows and for shallow planing.  But I think I should be able to cross 12" deep water no problem with the plate all the way up.  Maybe it is a good thing the motor I got came with a Bob's low water pick up.  
I have not had it on the water yet  :(  Maybe next weekend.  Any bets on how fast a 170 will go with a 90hp evinrude, stilletto 17" pitch prop, jackplate up a little, two dogs, two people, no bimini and a full tank of fuel.  I am hoping to break the 40 mph barrier, but I don't know if 90 hp is enough to make it happen.

I have an E-Tec 90 on my 170. It tops out at around 38.

We hit the water today!  It floats...    The boat did great.  There is always a little wonder about an old boat that has never been water tested  The hull felt solid and true.  It tracks great. With a 90 hp evinrude on a jackplate and an old junk 17" prop.  I managed to get it to 37 mph on the GPS with a 5 mph head wind.  I think with a better prop I should be able to hit 40.  I do have an issue of porpoising at times with the boat.  Does anyone have a similar issue.  I run very little or no positive trim, but the bow does not want to stay in the water.

You did change the center of gravity a little with the jack plate and I'm not sure if the height adjustment would affect porpoising.  Mine will porpoise with a little + trim but if I back off the trim a bit she'll lay right back down in the water.  Maybe you need to get some tabs?

I also changed the layout of my 17'.  What workes for me (and less expensive that tabs) was to add a doel fin/stabilizer.  Bobs machine makes that seems to popular.  This is the one I had and it eliminated my proposing: SE Sport 300 Hydrofoil.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses.  We took the boat out again today.  It just makes me smile.  Starting from an old junk hull and now to have something that runs and drives great.  I found an old doelfin in my shed and threw it on.  It seemed to make a difference, but that could have been from having two extra people and two more dogs!  Either way the boat did great.  I could not be happier.  I still have things to do trailer stuff, radio, fix my gauges, etc.  I will report some postings on performance and how everything holds up no it.

I have a 94 200 Osprey and from experience I can tell you that trim tabs are the way to go no matter what boat you have. When I put them on my AS i could not believe the difference. Will never own another boat without them. They are worth every dime you pay for them.

And the saga continues :!:   I have had the boat out a few times.  And I think I have most of it dialed in.  It runs out at 5200 RPM at 38 mph with my powertech prop :)   I think I might haven an inch of pitch taken out of it.  The porpoising problem was remedied with the doelfin.  I am not a big fan of them but it seems to help.  I might fab an anti-ventilation plate similar to Bob's Machine shop eventually.  The boat is touchy to loading when it comes to being level side to side.  I am not used to that yet.  I used to have a nearly flat bottomed skiff with an eight foot beam. :pig:

Now for the fun part.  I purchased a set of factory AS bait boxes from Tommy at Hammerhead Boat Works in Tampa today .  Well I had my father pick them up for me since he was in the neighborhood.  I can't wait to see them.  I will post pictures of them when I get them from pops.  My question is....can anyone with these boxes show me how they were mounted from the factory and what you have done to make them better ?  Are they mounted flush with bottom of the hull and through bolted to the transom?  I remember seeing someone that had modified them and even posted a video of his bait in the on youtube   But I forgot what the post was called.  Any help is appreciated.
