Wakes vs Waves
« on: September 11, 2009, 06:39:53 PM »
Just wondering, went boating for the long weekend last week in Georgian Bay(Lake Huron) for a family get together, man was it rough, not because of the waves but the wakes of big boat traffic

My question is, do you handle big wakes the same as big waves ? Are wakes more dangerous?

Are you anchored?
If so, with one or 2 anchors?
If the current is going one way and the wake another it could be dangerous.

Beached with big waves coming in? many a boat has been sunk that way.
The freeboard in the back on the older AS is not a great mind-easer with with either of these situations.

One of my favorite camping spots is an "unofficial" recreation spot and on weekends, these idiots are towing tubers close enough that I worry about my anchor line.  So naturally it makes for a tough time when sitting in your boat - and I was in my 230. I would have been seasick if I was in my 170

No no, we weren't  anchored, just heading towards a popular beach, a 30 min ride. At the beginning we were following this big 30 footer the ride was fairly smooth until we had to change course, then it became a lot rougher, wakes coming from different direction at the same time , felt unpleasant  :pale: , end up following another boat that was going at the same beach

I'll tell you what, I prefer big waves
