1974 222 Rebuild question, and advice needed.
« on: August 19, 2009, 09:31:12 PM »
I am rebuilding a 1974 222 and I am goin to be putting a new deck in after I repair/Beef up the origional stringer system.
The boat being self bailing is extremely important to me. The deck will already be (1) one incher higher than the origional by defaulf of using the old deck as a template.
I am putting  450lb outboard on a 20 inch setback bracket for power. The question is...

Would you recommend me raising the deck further, or shoud it be fine as is, and inch higher than the origional? Were the boats self bailing as origional, I never got to test mine?

Any advice/Input will be greatly appreciated.
I will post some pics of the rebuild process when I get some pictures.

I would add another inch for sure.  With all that weight out back, the stern tends to sit low.

In my rebuild I went back with a slightly lower sole hieght (1/4").  I closed the transom and added a 26" bracket and a 225 Suzuki 460 lbs.  I put scuppers in the side instead of the transom.  Unfortunately that turns out to be right at the waterline and takes on water when I move weight to the stern.

You mentioned using the original sole as a template.  Does that mean you are leaving it in?  That would be the equivalent of 4 sheets of plywood.  That's a couple hundred pounds of excess weight.  Also, are you pulling the old foam from the stringers and bilge?  If it is soaked that's another 600 lbs.  Before you decide to raise the sole make sure you get out all the excess weight.  If not then 1" isn't going to be enough.   IMHO.

I cut the old deck off, and left about a one inch rim so I have something to line up the new deck with, so the new deck will  be about one inch higher than the origional. My bracket will be 19inch setback. I think I will move the fuel tank forward, and have the console also a little more forward than origional. I pulled some of the old foam out, it seemed in really good shape, but there didnt seem to be any real way for water to get in it either.

Sounds like your hull is in much better shape than most of the rebuilds.  That's great and will save ton of work.  Since you are using the edge of the liner to as your benchmark you just need to make sure to build up the stringer tops to make up for that one inch gap.  Also, I would put in some bulkheads with cleats to support the seams.  What is your plan for the chase tray that you cut out?  Maybe putting in some PVC chase tubes?

Let's see some photos. I am in the middle of a rebuild too. Does anyone know what to use to raise the floor off the stringers?

If you keep existing stringers, you can use either foam or wood: glass it to the tops of the stringers and off you go.

You can also use hull and deck putty, when you lay your deck down, which will give you a little lee way, since it will be hard to get it all exactly perfect.

I will post some pics tomorrow.

Kyle,  here is an affordable shelter if you are interested.  I used this one in the final stages of my rebuild when I had to have the boat on the trailer (which is too long for the garage).
