repowering 79 22 FF
« on: August 11, 2009, 02:46:46 PM »
Hi all, Looking to repower my 1979 22 ff deep vee.   Concerned about extra weight of a v6 4 stroke. Thinking about a new 200 yamaha hpdi to replace my 1989 225 yamaha excell. Any one familiar with the hpdi. Would the 200 hpdi be comparable to power of  my old yamaha. I could cruise @ 30 mph @ 4000 rpm top speed of 42mph on the gps. Been looking at different options for repowering for a while and the weight of the 200 hpdi seems to fit the hull the best. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks------Bill

If you like your 200 Excel, you'd like the 200 HPDI.  You can use most of the same rigging and maybe even the same prop.  The HPDI is a little heavier than your old motor but not much - that injection pump and plumbing is about 50 lbs - but it will use less gas compared to your current motor and you should notice an improvement in power.

The 200 HPDI is a 2.6 litre engine block - note that the 225, 250, and 300 V-Max HPDI models use a 3.3 litre block - and there's no replacement for displacement.  I'm not sure if Yamaha is offering the 3.3 series in 2009, but you might be able to find an older one still laying around - sales have been off a bit lately...   If you can find a 225 HPDI for a price that's in the ballpark of the 200, you would really like the performance improvement of the 3.3 litre engine on your 22 foot FF.

Hope this helps - see ya on the water!
