Looking good!

How thick is your fairing compound on the bottom?

thicker than id like it ya know, but that area is so stout from the tabbing and extra glass on the inside that it shouldnt be an issue, especially with how strong this epoxy is. theres 3 skims over it right now, and its actually a little proud of where it needs to be. i used a long piece of aluminum angle to spread it from the keel out and it started to drag on me being so hot out, so ive got some small lines and holes to fill still. then all the fresh glass on the keel. hopefully have that about done this weekend... figure out when youre headed this way?

I'll be over that way the weekend of the 23rd.

One thought, to avoid any flexing issues (cracking) you might put a layer of thin mat / cloth over that epoxy filler.  I dunno if that is an "accepted practice", but seems like it couldn't hurt...

ehhh, i thought about it but i just dont think it would be of any benefit, other than to make more fairing work to fill in the weave. if anything comes apart its going to be the original first layers of mat in the bottom of the hull. this epoxy bond is not only strong, but flexible to a point... ya ill be around the 23rd pm me your plans and whatnot and well figure something out...

NICE work. The keel work especially...like that you brought her forward to the bow-eye area.

Should make a difference in how she tracks, especially in heavy slop.

You're almost there...this last little bit will be tough, 'cause you're chomping at the bit but...as we all know, paint is 95% prep.

My guy is using a black coating in between hull sandings (raising the grit) to easily show the high/low spots. Don't know what its called...but effective. Almost like how they use candle smoke to fit fine shotguns.

You guys ever seen it used?

Scott, its called a "guide coat".  We use it all the time painting cars. A lot of guys use the cheapest Walmart brand black spray can they can buy. 3M has a canister of something like lampblack powder with a special applicator that looks like a wax sponge applicator. They say it works better because you are not spraying some unknown solvent on the job that might cause contamination.

I've seen black spray paint used as a "guide coat"you spray it on and use it to see low spots as you sand with a long block sander

Thanks guys. My rebuilder has been and is a perfectionist. One reason why its taking so long. Really don't care. Can ride/fish/eat chicken anytime, other options. Looking now like end of October to complete the structural rebuild. First of November to begin rigging.

Dirtwheels, thanks for this side-step. The guidance the boys have given is worthwhile to all.  Thanks guys.

agreed paint is 95% prep but 100% more enjoyable than grinding glass!

ya a faint mist of black spray paint will go on the hullsides. i like to use the ridges of fairing compound left by the knife on the bottom to guide there.

been real busy but finally got some primer on. had some interprotect 2000 laying around from a bottom job on my uncles boat so i put it to use. i like to use it as a good thick first coat over raw fairing below the waterline. picking up some 545 next week for the best price.... goal is to be right side up by christmas.

this was the bad chine with the big crack in it.

stay tuned...

ya shouldnt be that long on the topside. all thats getting faired is the cap work and bulkhead in the front. maybe the console too... gonna go topless for awhile until i get a hardtop built.
