Replaced all gauges but temp & tilt trim gauges don't work
« on: July 28, 2009, 07:52:15 AM »
I have a 2001 Yamaha 115 four stroke on my 20' Osprey.  I replaced all the old gauges with Red International gauges and wired them the same as the old ones.  The tilt trim gauge was broken when I bought the boat and didn't work.  I can't find a guage wire diagram for the 115 4 stroker anywhere, not even in my manual.  I ran the ground from gauge to gauge then to the ground bar.  Does the tilt & trim gauge have a ground from the tilt trim sensor that is suppose to be used instead?  The temp gauge is the other story.  Thanks in advance for any help here!

Are you sure the sensor is functioning? (trim/tilt)
I don't know Yamahas (though I own an FJR1300) but on my 'Rude the sensor will stick. I have to keep it greased regularly.
Does the Yamaha have this type of mechanical sensor?  :scratch

Edit: After re-reading your post, I'm I wrong in assuming you have not hooked up the sensor wires to the gauge?
The sensor is a variable resistor (I think that's the correct term) that regulates the current flow through the gauge based on the position of the motor. Most gauges "fail" because the mechanical operation (movement of the arm on back of the motor) becomes impaired.

Here is the front of the sensor on an '02 F115.  They will stick.  Trim the motor all the way up and soak it several times with Corrosion-X or similar and gently work the little arm back and forth.  They are plastic and will break if you force it.

I connected the same Sensor wire connected to the old gauges, One ground wire, and one ignition wire.  I'm not sure but assume it is the correct sensor wire since the old gauge was broken and not just not working.

Thank you for the picture and advice!  I'll check the sensor and lub it to free it up.  It very well could be the cause.  I'll let you know what I find.

thank you both for your help!!!!!
