Advice on 17 I am Looking At
« on: July 25, 2009, 08:34:49 PM »
Guys need some advice on this boat. http://capecod.craigslist.org/boa/1268688415.html

Boat needs transom redone and has some soft spots in deck. Trailer ok shape. 2004 low hour 40hp Suzuki in pretty good shape. What would you value this package at?

Also how will the 17 run with that 40hp? Will I be able to plan off?

Owner is asking $3500 for the whole package, values the motor at $2500.

Just looking for some input on my next potential money pit

A 17 with a 115 would be nice.  A 40?  I don't think so.

Hey Mr Osprey check this thread out! The 170 that I talk about is now priced at 800.
Some issues, soft floor etc. but cheap! I'm betting that the one up there needs a whole new floor as well.

In today's market you should be able to get a boat that is ready to use with little to no work.  40 hp is way underpowered.

Thanks for the input guys, what would a boat that needs this much work go for? I do not mind doing the work cause then I can make it to my desire, but need some help in valueing it. I would say the boat and trailer are not worth more then $500 becaue of all the work, and I have no idea what a suzuki engine is worth. The guy said he would split up the package tho and sell the boat and trailer alone.

You should make him an offer on the boat and trailor you are comfortable with let him keep the motor I have a 17 with a 125 and wouldnt go with anything smaller than a 90. I will say ths is my first boat and I love it 1987 17 striper with a 2002 125 merc and I only paid 3500. So if you look forward to a rebuild go for it or you can keep shopping and find a good deal thats ready to enjoy. good luck please keep us informed.

Just left a deposit on a 1971 Mako 17 Angler w/a 88spl and trailer for $2200. I think I got a good deal and transom and deck are SOLID. Picking it up sometime next week will post pics if I figure out how to.
