Dont you have an older model F150?  If I were you, I'd save a truckload of money and throw a new engine in that truck.  Those older Fords are very straightforward to work on, and I would bet you could replace that engine yourself.

Did you put that thing in some mud or something?  I've heard nothing but great things about the older F150's.  Unless you have a lot of miles on it...

If you do decide to switch the engine out, I would go with the 300 (4.9 Straight 6).  You can't kill those old engines, and they're great for towing; better than the V8 302 actually.  Terrible on fuel mileage though...

yeah a reman'd long block is only 1100 to 1500 depending on cam and pistons used... we've replaced engines before in our searay and the '81 cobia we had, not too hard...

yeah for a while i was going mudding a few weekends a month but never really gon hard core in it, just enough to not get stuck... i do have 146K miles on it and 20K of which was put on in less than 10 months... and ive been towing my AS atleast twice a week since i bought it :)

i got the 302... mileage sucks (12 mpg highway) but i really dont care too much, i've gotten used to it so its just figured in like the other bills lol

I just bought a 1994 Ford F150 w/ the 300 six, 135k mi.  I plan on using it ONLY to pull the boat, so far it's done great for that.  My dad had one w/ a 302 like yours, but it was 2wd.  He used it while he worked at a boat dealership, so he was pulling boats large and small almost daily.  He sold it w/ 287k miles 4years ago, original motor and trans, and I still see the old truck around town pulling a utility trailer.  That's what sold me on buying the one I have now and I'm very happy with it.

The old straight six was a great motor... probably the best Ford ever made - but buyer beware on the V6 they started producing in the newer bodystyle (I think 1998/9)?  That motor had serious problems, as it was a smaller motor they stroked to get to 4L.  A lot of them had head gasket problems and would hydro-lock after sucking coolant into the cylinders.  How do I know?  I had one... but dumped it before it ever locked up.

As a side note, the 4.6 and 5.4L V8's were both good motors as far as longevity...

5.8L (351) - that's a great motor.  :thumleft:  I had one in my '91 F150 4x4.  165k and not a tick out of the engine when I traded it.  :salut:
I also had a straight six 300 in my E150 van - drove it for 16 years and still ran decent when I sold it at 165k.

If the newer Fords were not $10k-15k or more than a comparable Toyota truck, I wouldn't have switched - I had 25 years invested in Ford.

yeah I have to agree with the 300 six.  That is a great motor.  Tows way better than the 302.  It has much more low end torque than any V-8 due to the long stroke.  We had a bunch of ford work trucks over the years and our drivers beat the snot out of them.  The 300 six was by far the best.  Don't overheat it though (shouldn't with any motor) the long head will warp and the head gasket will blow.  We had one that had a knock.  So we had it rebuilt.  About a year later the knock came back.  So we figured there is something wrong with that one so we'd just run it untill it blew up.   Well it never did.  That old truck ran forever with that knock.  We never had one let us down.   I wish they still made those babies.  Yeah the fuel mileage wasn't that great though.

This is what my dad used to say whenever people would ask him if he ever had any problems with his old Ford Truck-  "Well, I think the hood latch mechanism has froze up.  Probably because I've never had to use it."

i've driven the truck out to colorado lived out there for 6 months then drove back... in those 6 months i put 16K miles on it, 3K on 4wheeling trails. the 35" mud-terrains and those 6 to 8 % grade mountain passes did kill my transmission though. along with towing the sea ray, then my AS and the atv trailer alot...

it was fun in colorado though
