Tach signal comes from the stator. It is passed through the rectifier/regulator on 9 amp and higher systems and out the gray wire. On 6 amp system the yellow/gray wire from the stator ties to the gray tach wire in the engine harness. Manual tilt models used a 6 amp rectifier ($60, 3 wires, red, yellow and yellow) and power tilt models used a 9 amp rectifier/regulator ($375, 5 wires, yellow, yellow, gray, black, and red). Just did a rectifier on a 1986 115hp OMC. Arcing the battery cables can/will take out most OMC rectifier/regulators.
