Could I ?....Should I ? take on this project????
« on: June 15, 2009, 03:48:01 PM »
Hi Folks.....I am a newbie to the site and have just moved down to the Keys a few months ago.

Truth is, I have always loved the old Aquasports and have always wanted one.  I owned a 69 whaler a number of years back for Striper fishing up north.

I've got my eye on a classic 1973 24' cuddy with starboard steering.  I want a boat to bottom fish the reef about 6 miles out but then also be seawothy enough to troll the drops and blue water.  I feel this could be a good choice.  She is currently powered by a 200hp Johnson

I have alot of time on my hands and was thinking about buying her and refinishing her in pearl grey with black and white trim.  I think I could probably find someone to rent me some space to work on her....and with the right tools and advice could probably do a good job.  I'm not sure though, as I've never embarked on a project like this before.

thoughts/comments would be welcome...thanks in advance

Welcome aboard podman326  :!:  :!:
With basic carpentry skills, a natural curiosity of how things are built, a little pride, the ability to ask and listen and a little common sense it should be a worthy undertaking.  We're here for ya.

Should be a good rig for your purposes.  Grab the boat, and start ripping into her!

JimCT has been working a side console 240.  Here's a link to the rebuild thread - it's a long one:

Well, I think my mind is made up....I still love the older aquasports...and as fascinating as it is to read  about jimct's rebuild, I'd rather be out fishin' than working on a massive undertaking like that!!!!  thanks for the insight!!!!

My advice - go buy this 246XF on eBay for $2900 (it's a steal!) and get a trailer to take her home!  She looks to be in pretty good shape and no where near the overhaul that you would have with the 240:

And here may be a trailer:

See ya on the water!
