What type of filler or glazing compound to use
« on: June 01, 2009, 06:49:08 PM »
Hello again everyone.  It's been awhile, but between illness, bad weather and work.  I finally reached a point where I am ready to put the finishing touches on my transom rebuild.... Aquasport 19-6... This has been a real education on boat restoration.  I've done a lot of old cars, but this is my first boat attempt.  I have learned the hard way about what works and doesnt work.  Sometimes in talking to suppliers and visiting manufacturers websites, I get information overload.  I don't want to use automotive bondo...(though I've been told I can if I seal it well)...Any suggestions on a good glazing compound or bondo-like material that can been used  to fill and smooth over scratches, pinholes, small blemishes or uneven surfaces...slightly high-low areas that are left after sanding.  I am looking for something with good adhesion and waterproof.....thanks for any help.  Allan in Poquoson.

Quick thoughts: for bulk filling (ONLY over polyester), use America's cup.  Cheap, easy, will not shrink much.  Cannot use over epoxy!

For final fairing during priming, use Interlux Watertite.  It is epoxy based (will go over polyester OR epoxy, but you cannot go back to polyester after using this).  It is VERY easy to work with, but $$$.

Thanks for the information.   I guess I'll go with Watertite since everything I've been using is epoxy.  I actually could just keep sanding and live with a few minor imperfections, but I really want a super smooth surface for my final coatings...after the transom is done, I've still got the floor to do and some minor gel coat repair.  I don't think I'll be as picky with the floor. I want this boat in the water.  At this rate I might make winter Stripper season.  Allan

The floor is way more forgiving because it will be covered with non-skid.  Get the floor semi-fair and paint it.

I used System Three Quickfair.  Easy to mix, streads easily and is epoxy based (basically epoxy resin pre-mixed with micro ballon filler).  Ready to sand in 4 hours and fully cured in 24 hours (still sandable but more work).  Once sanded and cured it is ready for either an epoxy coat or epoxy based primer.  I used System Three High Build Yacht Primer above the waterline and epoxy resin with graphite filler on the bottom.
