New Owner Early 70's Custom 170
« on: May 11, 2009, 08:46:50 AM »
Hi Folks,
I bought this boat last fall and cleaning her up, hope to have in the water soon. I've got a bunch of questions, learned a lot reading this forum. I need to license the boat but not sure of the year. The hull plate serial number is C 595 and says Custom 170. Originally a center console it has been converted to a side console, which is great for me. I will use this for trolling on Lake Superior so side console setup gives more room. There is no built-in gas tank, I thought all these boats had them? I'm going to hang a 7.5 hp Merc on the transom for a kicker, still has the original 65hp Johnson on it. Don't want to be on Lake Superior without a backup motor. I think having a lighter main engine and the front controls should balance the extra motor. Also going to shift the batteries forward as well. Anyone see any problems with this set-up? Can anyone tell me the year this was made?
Thanks and this site is great.
Brad
Oh, were all 17's  Custom 170's or is there something different about the Custom?

Welcome aboard BradinDuluth  :!:  :!:
If you haven't already done so look here in our photo gallery for some info and to see if any of the pictures match the "liner" in your boat. I realize the console was moved on yours but look at the layout of the casting deck and the rod holder layout. The dates on the literature may not be exactly right because my '71 170 has the same liner layout as the '70 literature so one of them is wrong    I also have the single hatch on the casting deck and the '71 literature shows 3.  I think they called then the "Custom 170" because you could customize them at order time.  For instance - I still have not seen another that has the same rod storage as mine (good thing since they were made for short rods).
The Aquasport center consoles had the fuel tank sitting inside/under the console back in those days - sitting on top of the sole but inside the console.  Mine still is.
I don't remember seeing a badge on the side of the boat that said "Custom 170" though.  Could be wrong though.
Welcome to the 170 family - lots of our membership have 170s.  8)
