Hi,

I recently just bought a 1972 170 and couldn't be happier about it!
As soon as i can figure out how to post pics I will, but so far I keep shutting myself out everytime I try. The boat was actually briefly listed under the classifieds section, but I have already changed a couple things, so I will add new pictures.

Question: Does anyone have an idea of the range of a 170 with the stock size tank(27 gal) and a Optimax 115?
I am sure that I can figure it out by burning gas and the GPS, but just thought I would ask.

Thanks.

-Alex

Welcome aboard lackofcommitment   :!:  :!:
The 170 is a wonderful little boat that is so easy to handle by yourself - I've had mine for 23 years and wouldn't think of losing her.
For me, I figure about 4-6 gal/hr at cruising speed (25mph).  My tank is 24 so that is about 100 miles.

Thanks RickK,
Another question you might be able to answer seeing as you are running a 115 as well.
On the spec pages you posted in the gallery section for the 170, it says max hp is 85, but the placard on my boat says max 130?

Anyways, thanks for the help.

You have to look at the year the spec sheet was written - that was probably back in the 70s when motors weren't big.  Yours is a 72 and it shows 130?   I'll have to look at the spec sheets again.
Does your casting deck and rod storage look like the ones in this pic?  The spec sheet was supposedly from 1971 but I bet it's from 72 (mine doesn't look like that though - the rod storage and casting deck is different on mine (single opening in casting deck) plus my fuel tank is inside the console, so no fuel port on the gunnel)

Did they not build rod storage under the gunwales in 1976? Or maybe was it just an option? Mine doesn't have it and it doesn't appear that it was covered over. That would be a nice thing to have, since I have a problem leaving the dock with anything shy of a dozen rods per person. I wonder if it was covered if I could find it again once I decide to redo it.

My 1972 is EXACTLY like the one in the brochure, judging by the spec sheet and the images, I would say the brochure is an exact match to 1972, not sure if 1972 and 71 were identicle.

However, i will go take a pic of the placard but it is very hard to read(oxidized), but i am sure it says 130 is max horsepower? Seems high for the boat by manufacturer recommendation.

Thanks for all the help, such a great boat.

I remember a post a long time ago - maybe by JimCT when he had his '72 170 and I think I remember him posting the CG plate.  Have to be 5 years ago anyway - I'll search unless anyone else has a CG plate from back then........
