Mounting Under Gunwhale Rod Racks on 1974 19-6
« on: April 12, 2009, 01:20:43 PM »
I'd like to mount horizontal rod racks under the gunwhales on my 1974 19-6 Osprey.  The racks come with brackets that seem to indicate the need to drill in two places: 1) bottom chine area and 2) top.  Is there a smart way to do this so I don't drill a hole in my boat?  Should I just try to epoxy them on and not drill and screw?

I would try the epoxy route before I drilled anything into the sides of the hull - or glue a backer block and then drill into it.

I just mounted under gunwale rod racks on my 1974 19-6.  Rod racks were made of starboard and I drilled into the side and used 3/4" stainless self tapping screws to mount them.

I measured a bunch of times then drilled just enough to make it through the 1/8" outer wall (bulehead?).  I then poked a toothpick into the hole to see how much clearance was in between the bulkhead and the outer wall (hull?). There wasn't too much room in between these walls.  Again, I used 3/4" hardware.

I also epoxy coated the holes I'd drilled prior to mounting the rod holders. I've been doing this with all of the holes I've drilled into this boat.  I want it to last.

I've found that Ace Hardware is cheaper for stainless hardware than Lowes or HD and they have a larger selection; plus a lot more specialized parts.

I'll see if I can take a pic of one of my rod holders and post it up here.

Are you saying that there is a liner in your boat?  I would have assumed that we're looking at the inside of the hull and there was nothing but however thick the hull is, there.
Got any pics of under the gunnel looking up?

Hey RickK yeah my 19-6 is the same way it has a liner. With short enough screws yeah you could screw them he has. His look very nice on there. I did away with my rod holder's there and just installed supports. I was tired of tripping on them and poles falling out.

All these years and I thought I was looking at the inside of the hull and that the square board on the floor/wall joint was how it was finished. Most liners have some substance to them (rod racks built into them, cleats, pie plates so you can get behind them, etc).  Like the liner in my 170:

Now that I spent the better part of a day making cypress rod holders now I see those beautiful rob holders that are much more functional    the other option is to fasten them to that bottom strip like mine if you can

You can actually see the top of the liner in this pic as well

P.S. Don't count out the orange box coming from the receiving manager at The Home Depot in my town

Thanks for all the input.  I will try to drill but be careful in doing so.  Hopefully I will be proud enough to take pictures and post them!
