1987 Sandpiper 222
« on: April 10, 2009, 04:11:03 PM »
I have been looking at an 87 Sandpiper but have been able to find out little about this model.  The hull type seems popular on this site but I really need some help.  The current owner claims "no wood" construction but given the date I question that.

Is there wood in the floor?
Is there wood in transom?
Is there wood in stringers?
Are there any particular issues with this model?
Are there any particular issues with this vintage of Aquasport?
What should I be looking for in making my decision?

Thanks for your help!

Welcome aboard mobjack22  :!:  :!:

Is there wood in the floor? Probably - end grain balsa
Is there wood in transom? - 50-50 chance at that time.
Is there wood in stringers? No
Are there any particular issues with this model?  None that I've heard
Are there any particular issues with this vintage of Aquasport? Nope
What should I be looking for in making my decision?
Look it over good for any obvious hull damage (it is 22 yrs old so it won't be brand new).
Look for odd looking reflections in the hull - signs of repair.
Bounce up and down on the raised motor and watch the transom for flex - shouldn't be any to speak of.  Bring a rubber mallet and smack the transom all over and listen for different sounds.
Look for soft spots in the floor and if you find any, evaluate what is the extent and how hard to repair.
Start the engine - check the compression or take it to a mechanic.
Take it for a test run with the owner - watch what he does if anything special.  See how the boat rides, sits in the water, how the motor runs.  T&T work?  Planers? Do they work?
Look at the gauges - do they all work.
Look at and inquire about electronics included.  They'll never be what you really want but are a good start anyway
Look at the dates on the batteries.
Look at the trailer and it's condition.
Offer what you think it's worth.

My $.02

I have a different model, but mine was built in 87. That was the last year they were built in Hialeah I think, before a new company bought them. Mine is very solid construction and structurally in great shape.

Thanks for the great info Rick.  Please keep the info coming.

What is the ride like on these hulls?  I will be runninng the rivers feeding into and the Chesapeake Bay.  Frequently choppy but always rolling swells.

Great example Scott - put a different liner on the same hull and you have a different model
The difference in the ride is basically dependant on the condition of the seas - my 230 explorer, with a lot of the weight forward, will take a rough sea at a low speed WAY different than a 230 Osprey where everything is center to rear weight.  At a higher speed with both trimmed out, the same hull kicks in because both are on their tail and my weight being forward affects little (unless I'm going too fast for the conditions AGAIN   ).
