What is the ideal thickness for a transom?
« on: March 01, 2009, 01:57:23 AM »
Planning on replacing the half transom on the a 1970 22-2 and doing a fully enclosed transom.  I've read the thickness for a transom should be at least 2" but I've seen some rebuilds only using two pieces of 3/4" ply which equals to 1.5".  Is there really an ideal thickness?

2" is standard.  1.5" core and 1/4" glass inside and out.

If you are going to a full transom are adding a bracket of some kind?  If so the transom needs additional strengthening, such as knee braces.

Good luck.

When we did the transom on my 23 walk around, we used 3 layers of 3/4 ply glassed prior to being set in, glassed again when set in and clamped/screwed/bolted together. Then reglassed the knee braces in. We had plenty of room to work with inside. The transom was converted from a well with twins to an enclosed transom with a bracket and a single.
