Insurance ?
« on: February 13, 2009, 04:56:26 AM »
Mod Edit 6 Oct 2014: While this thread is outdated, it is interesting to read what insurance pricing was 5+ years ago.

Good day to all.I am curious if anybody has had any dealings with Geico ins. Iam insured with Progressive right now and was shopping around got an online quote from Geico for what appears to be same coverage for half the cost, that seems a little to good to be true.Any comments are welcome.

I have them for auto and so far they have treated me well. AIG wanted $3200 for my 2006 Silverado, 2003 Infiniti and 1998 Cherokee. With Geico I'm at about $2000. Wouldn't be surprised if their boat rates were really lower than the others.

..

I live here in Winter Haven, FL.

State Farm is discontinuing boat/renters/homeowners policies; so I have been shopping.

Progressive was way too high on my boat coverage. The lowest price I have found so far has been with BoatUS.com. I haven't gotten a quote from Geico as of yet.

I think I may just go with BoatUS insurance along with their sea tow package for when I am over in Tampa Bay.

Best rate I got recently was with Allstate - they beat State Farm by a good margin.  Of course, it is probably different in every state.  As the EPA says, "your mileage may vary..."

I had a pretty hard time finding an insurance company that would actually give me insurance on my AS.  A lot of them wouldn't even quote because the boat was so old and the motor was brand new.  I eventually found coverage from Nationwide for about $320 yearly... Is that high?  I guess it doesn't matter since beggers can't be choosers...

FWIW ,I went with Boat US.  I had a full survey done to establish a value, then had a STATED VALUE policy put into place.  If it sinks, gets stolen, etc... I get $X.

I did the declared/stated value on my policy with Allstate and State Farm.  Hard to come up with a good book value on a 25 year old boat...

More = More.  Ain't it the truth - about everything boating?  As my boat racing buddy used to say:

I have been with GEICO for my auto insurance for a long time, and love them, wanted to use them to insure my boat but the rep that I spoke to was kind enough to tell me to shop the competition because with my boat being an '86 all they would insure would be the '96 motor and with depreciation the insurance would not be worth much more than the paper it was written on.    Progressive (although I really dont like them) was able to write a policy on "declared value"

One caveat though, Progressive does not (or at least did not 5 years ago) inspect before they insure.  This can be a good thing I guess but for me it was bad. We hit a rock with our boat 1 month after purchase $7000 +  in damages.  Progressive tried to accuse us of insurance fraud stating that they felt that we had bought the boat damaged and wanted us to PROVE there was no damage when we bought it(how do you prove that??). Luckily our marine mechanic had looked at the boat and inspected it before we bought it and they took his word for it and finally agreed to fix it after 3 months of fighting with them.

My suggestion, go with someone who will write a declared value policy (declare an amount that would at least replace your MOTOR, But do take pics of the boat with a digital camera (with dated pictures) Also take the boat to a mechanic or boat repair shop and have them give you a written letter stating the boat is seaworthy,  send your ins company copies of the pics and the letter, that way if you do ever have a problem they wil have their "proof".

Also,  If you have time to take a boater safety course it will save you some $$$ on your policy.
