1972 22-2

I recently acquired a 72 22-2.  I am not certain of any other designation it may have such as ccp, osprey, etc.  the plate affixed to the inside of the transom on the port side plainly states “Aquasport 22-2”, max. 1500 lbs, 200hp, serial number k193.  So any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I was planning to modify the transom to increase the transom height from 20’’ to 25” and to repair some of the delamination as shown in red in the picture.  But it seems that in another thread there was some concern over handling characteristics in doing this.  Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated as well.  The transom appears good except for this delamination, and rot/water retention was apparently prevented by a liberal dose of silicone.  Removal of the old engine bracket shows the bolt holes to be clean and dry.

The remainder of the boat cleaned up pretty good with the only repairs being required are the reinstallation of the rod holders under the gunwales, and a small crack in the hull.  Beyond that I just need to find a motor and controls and I’ll put it in the water without too much on the cosmetic side.

In 1972, the only 22-2 built by Aquasport was still the original designed by Sargent (one of the two original Aquasport partners). There were no additional names at that point. The fact that the boat only has the serial number and not a HIN (Hull Identification Number) definitely means that the boat was built before the first of November 1972 - they become obligatory after that.

I have the same year and model. I just blew out my engine.  I had a 200hp Merc on it.  Is there a minimun rated HP enigne for this? I know that max is 200.

I have heard that for good performance you should use at least 75% of max rated hp.  

Just what I've heard.  Others may have another opinion.

There are many 222 flatbacks out there running very will on a 150 hp.  I have a 200hp and it's really more than I need.

I recently purchased a '73 22-2 w/ a 130 hp Johnson. I was concerned about performance being the max at 200 to 230 depending what website info is accurate. The boat came w/ GPS. With 4 adults and 5 children, ages 9 to 13, we maintained a plane at 2600 rpm at 15 knts. Flat out, according to the GPS, she was moving at 29 knts. With me alone, 31 kts. As far as I can tell, the 130hp is plenty. The 130hp is a four cyl, which keeps the new/used purchase price down to a dull roar as opposed to the V6s of 150hp and north. Depends what your use will be...

I have a 125 Merc on mine and with full tank of gas (60 gallons) I run at 26mph flat out. I'm content with this. I did add a StingRay(tm) hydrofoil to the outboard and I now get on plane much faster at lower rpms.
