What would be the maximum gallon fuel tank in a 22-2
« on: January 31, 2009, 06:03:00 AM »
Questions;

(1)What would be the Ideal size/capacity tank that can be put on a 73' 22-2?  I will be running a 200 Yamaha, I dont go all out I just like to cruise, mostly boat will be used for fishing.  Approximately how much do custom made tanks costs?

(2)A friend wanted to know, he's almost about to pull the trigger on a purchasing a 76' 22-2 is it possible to fit a 70 or 80 maybe even a 90 gallon tank on this kind of boat?  I felt a bigger tank for him is ideal because we both live in West Palm Beach and whenever he goes out in the water he sometimes like going all the way to Miami sometimes even further down south such as Key Largo.  The boat he had was a 21ft SeaFox with a 250 Yamaha.  I forgot to ask how big of a tank he had but the first few times I went with him I was scared as hell cause several times I thought we were going to run out of fuel in the middle of the ocean.  Plus stopping at a Miami marinas gets expensive.  He had gotten a rough size estimate on a 80 or 90 gallon tank  and it was around 23"W 8"H and over 8ft long,  I just thought that it was just too big.

Help us out guys, is the capacity tank he wants too big? is it even possible to fit that tank in the boat, what would be the ideal size tank for me and my friend. Thanks

A custom tank can range from $5-10 per gallon.  I got mine for $5 per... you just have to shop around.  With AL costs down to very low levels, now is the time to buy.

I don't know how big of a tank you can fit in a '76, but I will bet 90 would work.  I have a 60 in my '71, and the '76 has deadrise - which means more room under the sole.

22 foot CCPs came with 85 gallon tanks standard, with 35-55 extra tanks optional.  Ospreys and the other semi-V boats can take extra tanks installed under the decks, but they need to be forward and not so large as to put the scuppers under water...

Hope this helps - see ya on the water!

When I asked my friend how big the tank was going to be he replied 23"W  8"H  and 10ft for a 90 gallon tank.  I guess when most of you are saying 70, 80 and even 85 are in those boats I guess it wouldnt be that bad but hearing a 10' tank it just caught me by suprise.

You might want to split a 10' long tank into 2 sections, with separate fittings for fill and supply.  A really big tank like that can cause some problems underway, when that volume of gas (and weight) starts moving around.  A half-full tank would have a huge weight transfer aft when the boat it accelerating to a plane - that's exactly what you don't need!  2 tanks of 45 gallons is preferred over a single 90 - also allows you to run out on 1 tank, and know you have the second as reserve.

My $0.02.
