New 1978 20 CCP
« on: January 02, 2009, 09:59:32 PM »
Good evening all. Well my friend and I started the new year with a bang I guess. We picked up a 1978 20 center console through Craigslist. I think we got a good deal. The only draw back is the soft floor around the console but that's all ready figured out. The transom is solid. Helps if you work for a fiberglass guy! This will be easy compared to some of the stuff we've done. I have a 2003 Merc 90 2 stroke to put on it for now. I wanted to have something more economical than my 23 Trophy with a 225hp carbed Johnson for close in fishing. My friend wanted to get away from a 4 person partnership. Our plans so far are:

Install the Merc 90
Repair the floor and other damaged areas
Replace the missing cleats and hawse pipes
Rewire everything
Pull the tank cover, remove, clean and inspect tank, install new fuel lines, reinstall tank and cover and seal
Redo the teak

My question for the moment is, what's the difference between the 20 center consoles (CC, CCP)? I've seen a difference in consoles but nothing else. I'll post some pics soon.

Thank's Brian

Welcome aboard Brian  :!:  :!:

Here is a good source of info on the differences in the models.
Basically, the older Ospreys have the 12 degree deadrise, shallow sides and are designed for inshore fishing. The CCP came out later and added a hull with 20 degree deadrise and deep sides giving a solid boat for both inshore and nearshore fishing.  Read the brochures - full of "good stuff".

Again, welcome aboard.

Great find! Good luck. You might find that your 90 HP is a bit challenged trying to push the CCP hull, while a Flatback might be no problem. A 150 HP engine would probably be fine with a 175 HP being the ideal. In any case, the 20 CCP is one of the toughest boats ever made!

You've got a classic Aquasport 200 CCP.  I really needs 150 HP to work well, and many have 200s on them.  Check out jdupree's posts - he has a nice 200 CCP and lots of info on his restoration/upgrades.

Feel free to ask questions as you work on her - someone on this site will probably have the answer!

See ya on the water and good luck!

Thanks guys. I know the 90 will be on the low side but I'm looking for economy at this point. I got the 90 as part of an insurance deal. Needs some repair but is a 2003. Maybe down the road a bit I'll sell that and move up some in hp. Also trying to save for a newer motor for my 23 WA. That 225 carbed Johnson sucks 16-18 gph. Most newer DI's and 4 strokes are 8-10gph. I may put the 225 on the 200 CCP not sure yet.

Here's one of the great things about this website... it turns out that Brian and I not only live in the same township, but we're only a few miles apart.  We exchanged phone info through PM and got the chance to meet up today.  Brian invited me over to look at his new find.  He admits that he has some work ahead of himself but he's jumping right in and with a real good bit of experience behind him.  So this summer, we'll get to put both our AS's in the water.  Imagine that, two classics in the same town and we don't even live in FL! Looks like we'll have to start a north gathering??  Good meet, Brian!

As Wayne said we were able to meet up today. Always good to make another friend! After talking to Wayne and listening to the info posted here, it looks like we are going to put the 225 on the AS. I figure with the right prop we can cruise faster but not burn as much fuel as it does on a boat twice the weight. First, we need to see exactly what size tank is in this thing and if it's any good. Previous owner says 30 gallons, not really sure here's right unless the tank was changed. If anyone is looking for a project 22-2 closed bow let me know. My buddy Dave has one. It rolled over at the dock (was stern to in a storm) a few years ago and has been sitting. Winshield is broken but it could be had for a REAL GOOD price. I would have considered this boat but I already have a 23' wa and wanted to stay under 20' if I could. So we maxed at the 20' mark but I think as will be well.

Congrats Brian!
I LOVE that boat! I have the same one. Here are my pics -->

How is the transom? She looks like she is in great shape and worthy of some TLC to bring her back to 100%.
About the motors... I have a Evinrude 225 on it and it is WAYYY to heavy for the boat. I had to replace the scuppers for the self bailing deck with ones that have the 1 way flap built into them because as you stood near the battery boxes water would flood the deck. I also moved both the batteries under the center console for the same reason as well as for safety. I have the Evinrude 225 for sale and as soon as I sell it I have a Evinrude 175 waiting in my garage. I agree with a prior post that this is probably the maximum weight/size for this hull. An Evinrude 200 is the same block/weight/motor as the 225 so there isnt any difference there. A 90 is weak.  Ive seen them with 150's as well. Keep in mind that I am talking about a 1986 motor. Im not sure what the weight difference is from an 86 to a 2008, but if its about 100lbs or so that may void my opinion. Its more about the weight for this hull than it is about the power. The Evinrude 225 on this hull MOVES! Instant streaming tears from the wind in your face. Very fast. I will be about to give you actual numbers as soon as I mount up my gift from santa... Lowrance lms 522 combo gps/fishfinder. But in any event, good luck and keep us posted on progress. We LOVE pictures

Brian,
Welcome.  Glad to have another 200ccp on the block.  I have a 81 Johnson 175 on mine that is more than enough power.  IMO a 150 is plenty of power and I also feel that newer models are actually stronger than the old ones with the same horsepower rating.  i.e. a 2009 2 stroke 150 would have 10-15% more power than a 1981 150.  Of course these are my opinions.  Once again welcome and glad to see another 200ccp.

allen456 and kaptainkoz,
I have admired both of your boats and looked at your pics many times trying to figure out what else is missing from ours. When I finish repairing the 90 it will get hung on the boat to be tried out. May use it for a while. Then once I can get to my other boat the 225 will be pulled from it and hung on the AS. The 90 will then get sold or traded in on a newer motor for my 23 walk around. I don't have anything in 150-175 range at the moment to use. kaptainkoz, your motor (1986) is the 2.6 liter version (first 225hp looper), 1987 was a 2.7 liter, and 1988 on were 3.0 liter. Mine is a 1988 and sucks fuel like crazy. We should be able to get some more mpg's from the 225 on the AS versus having it on the 23.

I figured I'd move over to the rebuild side. Here's some pics of the transom repair and tank tub.

Admin's note: Brian I edited this post to correct the pictures you posted (I did that above also), merged the two topics and moved the new topic into the rebuild forum as you implied.
Now, about the way you're posting pics: When you view the pic in Photobucket that you want to show us - don't copy the URL from the address box at the top.  There is a section to the right of the pic named "Image link codes".  The bottom one of the codes is "IMG Code - Forums & Bulletin Boards": just click in that box and the correct codes will be copied to your PC memory, then come back to your topic and right-click and click paste. You don't have to click any of the buttons above the posting area, you're finished.  The necessary "Img" codes will be pasted and when you're done with the post, we'll see the actual pics instead of just the links to the pics.
Hope this helps.
