1976 22-2 Rebuild

Hello all I am a long time lurker(jealous most of the time) :)  but my day has finally arrived.  I purchased the boat about 4 years ago so I would have it for when the time was right!  As you can see by the following pictures she was sitting idle!!!

I have been ready to do this for quite some time but I know that it is a process that is hard to do alone, so with a little nudge from my partner we are now off to the races.

I want to thank all you guys for the wealth of info that is on this site. I think that from your postings I can help prevent those costly learning curves!

The first several pictures were taken Friday before we began the initial teardown.

Saturday was the first real work day and much was accomplished. We managed to remove all of the cap, the fuel tank, and most of the floor. It was quite a successful day!

Redangler, Am wondering why you cut up the cap?  Are you going to convert to a center console?  That's what I would do.  That cap could be pulled in one piece, I think.  Building a new cap from scratch is a lot more work.

I probably should have mentioned that I am converting her to a center console, that might clear up why I cut out the cap.  We talked about keeping some of the cap but I really don't think it would have worked for my application.  I know it is going to be harder to build a mold but it will be exactly what I want(or so I think). I hope to have the rest of the foam out by the weekend but that depends upon my work schedule. So far only one small part of delamination that I can find. I will post better pictures wednesday.

Had a chance to get a better picture of her "New Profile". I like this line much better!



Today I had a chance to start on the foam removal.  Much to my surprise it was way easier than expected. I manged to remove all the foam left in the boat. Tomarrow I will discard it and give her a pressure wash to remove the final residue. I was surprised at how big the chunks came out, I figured I would be removing 2"x2" squares.





Along with the foam I found what will be the lure I use to get the first blood on her when she is completed. A little polish and it will be ready to break her in the right way.

I am pleasently surprised at how well the stringers look on both sides. I did not see any initial delamination when I removed the foam. The are some questionable areas along the mid line of the hull which I have posted below(it look to me just to be extra resin that cracked). I dont think this is any major problem but, I am a novice and not real sure at what I am looking at!

 







I pretty sure that this damage will be fairly easy to fix when I run the new PVC down the center to replace the existing support. Any comments would be appreciated. I should pictures of the outside of the stringers tomarrow.

Looks like you have a very solid hull to start with, you're in good shape.  

I agree, that looks like pooled resin - if you decide to put a new support down the middle you can just grind that old resin out first.

My only suggestion might be to add some perpendicular supports (bulkheads) to add some extra strength.  Otherwise it looks great.
