Whenever I pulled my tank out, it was a real pain getting all of that foam out around the sides, so I decided when I put mine back in that I wasn't going to put foam back in there in case I needed to pull it out again.  That may not be the right thing to do... but it worked ok for me.  I reused the aluminum straps to hold the tank in place after I put some strips of fiberglass insulation (the kind that goes in a house) underneath the straps.  The tank doesn't budge.

The wood underneath my tank was still rock solid, so I didn't run into that problem.  I would think your idea of using pvc to support the tank would work just fine.  Maybe add some foam between the strips of PVC then drop the tank on the foam while the foam's still wet (curing)...?  That's what I would do, but some have told me that I have a bad habit of keeping things a little too simple ...

What kind of ledge/lip are you leaving for the tank compartment lid to rest on?

When I removed the old deck I cut out the old ledge with about a 2-3 inch lip, so I will re attach the old ledge and fiberglass and resin it back in after grinding and sanding the back side of the old one back down so that it is back down to the old Fibeglass.
Think that will work?
Here is a Pic of the old ledge/lip:

sounds like a good idea reusing the original piece.  How many layers of glass are you going to lay on the new flooring? Does that material feel pretty solid?

Hopefully it goes well using the original peice. I have only sanded down the top. Will be sanding and grinding the backside this week.

Just got done putting 1 layer on top and bottom. After I did the first side it was still pretty flexible and I though man this is going to take a few layers to stiffen up. After I got the layer on the other side. WOW is it strong!! so for now I am Planning on 1 layer on the Bottom and probably 2 layers on top. maybe even a 3rd layer on top depending on how it looks when I do the seams. The Honeycomb basically had a layer of cloth on each side so when I added the resin then a layer of cloth you could say it has 2 layers on it now top and bottom.

Anyone else have any input on a total number of layers of Glass on HoneyComb?
How many on top and how many on the bottom?

There are lots of types of "honeycomb", don't know exactly what you have there.  If it was Nida, I would say one layer of 1808 on the bottom, at least two on top.  Make sure to increase the width of overlap on the hullsides as you lay the glass.

Mine is  1968 22-2. I stripped it down to repaint it a few years ago. The fuel tanks were leaking, but, on the older models they were on the deck, under the console. Two plastic 28 gallon  (Tempo) tanks fit perfectly snug under the console leaving space aft for a pair of batteries. Regarding hydraulic steering, I had the same problem with the 175 HP Johnson being tough to steer. What worked for me was the Teleflex "No Feedback" Helm. It is a single cable system and the wheel is as easy to turn as hydraulic steering. The wheel remains in position if left alone.

ok I was rinsing out the boat and in the middle on each side of the keel support when I stepped on what I am guessing is foam under the fiberglass air/water come bubbling up each time I stepped on a few spots.

Is there a smal bit of foam under there where the arrows are in the Picture below or what?

Should I remove this and put foam back or can I just remove it fiberglass back over this area?

what would the foams purpose be here ( maybe for sound?)? and I guess how much foam is there?

seems to be about maybe 1" thick by 8"wide or so, does this sound right? Thanks again ahead of time for any info.

are they the "pads" like on the 22-2's where the gastank edges rest?

no they are below the Keel support, lower than where the tank supports are further up, these run from up under the casting deck to the rear support where the back of the tank was. Just wondering if they really need to be there or not and I will just remove them.

Luv2Fly,

Those are stiffeners on either side of the center stringer.  There in no foam under that weave.  Its balsa wood squares.  I can guarantee that the balsa has turned to compost.  Mine was almost completely gone.  Just a shell of weave.  I used a thin cut-off disc to cut through the weave and pulled all the crap out.  I replaced it with 1/2" marine ply and covered it with 1700 biax.

Also, the center stringer is probably severely rotted too.  If you trim just the minimum glass off the top of that stringer the plywood core will pull out easily.  You can use the old one as a template for a new one.

After you get the old piece out you can grind down the weave to good glass and use 1700 biax to re-affix it.

If you haven't realized it yet, every bit of wood in those older hulls is pretty much composted by now.

Good Luck

MD
