What was wrong with the exterior skin on the transom?

Well, whoever had this boat before me tried to rebuild the transom. In between the outershell and the wooden transom was a mix of epoxy, glass and ceramic compound of some type. I tried chiseling, cutting, hammered for 2 days tryin to remove it before i decided to just cut it all out. Im not sure which way to go with the new transom. Either a plywood (marine grade) or a ceramic compund type or seacast?! Has anybody ever used a ARJAY (pourable ceramic compound) for a rebuild?

Have not used it, but here Arjay is the stuff.  I personally used Marine plywood, only because the pourable was not as popular when I was rebuilding.  Either will work though.

BTW, I am in N Tampa, let me know if you would like to see a finished product.

Not a whole lot, but its moving along.

scrub, wash and degreasing the hull.

A few days later, here I'm adding 2 layers of 1808 to help reinforce it some.
First one was about 7" wide (3.5" up the wall & 3.5" along the bottom) and the second layer was about 14".

Playing with the soon-to-be new strings.

Haha.. my gf wanted to help out. She had no idea what she was getting herself into!

One thing I would have done differently:  if your keel seems weak, or has ANY indication of water intrusion, do a little grinding from inside the hull and see what you have.  If necessary, repair from the inside.  Mine had some slight signs (that I did not address) and I ended up having to repair from the outside - requiring MUCH more fairing work.

LilRichard, your right absoluteky right about that. It felt a lil weak towads the bow so I layed down a few layer of 1808 ( 4 layers total) and one layer down the center of the keel. But I think Im gonna lay down one more over laping the other just as in case!

Yup. I did the same thing: here's the problem though... the core could be toast.  You may be ok, you'll know when you start working on the underside - see how it looks.  If it has a lot of stress cracks, you should probably do what I did - reinforce from the outside of the hull too.

Also, don't forget to extend the keel 4 ft toward the aft... it will make the hull handle MUCH better in turns!

Good luck, keep chugging along!

No sir - I should have been more clear: the keel has a core.  Mine was actually some sort of composite (I think it was more or less solid resin/fibers) but I do believe some keels may have been wood.  Make sense?

Yeah, I figured the inside was gonna be a cake and the underside was gonna be a different story!

Hey LilRichard, what are your plans this weekend? I would like to stop by and take a look at your FB.
