What do you pull your 22-2 with???

I have a 20 Lake & Bay flats boat now that I pull with my Mountaineer V6 4.0L. The boat loaded weighs around 3000 +/- pds. It pulls it fairly well..
For my 22-2 I am looking to enclose my transom, tower, porta bracket and a 200hp Yam HPDI. I am guessing all will weigh 4000pds +/-. So my question is if my Mountaineer is up for the task.
What does everyone use to pull their 22-2 ?? Will I need a trusty V8. I am thinking of trading in for a F150 Crew Cab Triton V8? Any thoughts?

Poppa used to pull mine with a '78 Plymouth Volare wagon (318 v-8). My uncle later used a '78 6.6 Trans Am. The sad part about it is, that Volare was more of a truck than the Mountaneer is. My boat is stock as a rock and pulls great with my 2 door 4x2 Tahoe. I've got the 5.7, which makes 255 horse with 330 ft. lbs of torque. Your Mountaineer, assuming it's a 2004 has 210 horse, with 254 ft. lbs of torque. While all this useless information doesn't answer your question, perhaps your better armed to make a decision.

Scott, I guess your right it, it shows the towing capacity at 3100pds.
With everyones experience after your rebuild what was the average weight with enclosed transom, tower etc...???
I think I better start looking for a bigger truck.

2001 GMC z-71 xcab 5.3 v8 - 116,000 miles. No tranny work ever done, have not even had to replace brakes since new. I haven't towed the 22-2 but once from Miami to Sarasota with it - pulled it wonderfully.

I had a 2001 4 liter 4x4 Mazda B4000 (same vehicle as the Ranger and same motor as your Mountaineer and the towing capacity was definately more than 3100 pounds. It would tow about 6000 pounds and I did so several times, even going well over on a short trip pulling a 1958 International 3/4 ton 4x4 (heavy son of a gun!). Your 4 liter Mountaineer should be more than up to the task of that 22-2. I now pull my 19'6" with a 4x4 f150 5.4 and have had no trouble whatsoever. It would pull that 22-2 pretty easy but I still think that Mountaineer should be fine.

Pulling it is one thing. Stopping is another. Pulling on a highway at speed is another thing again. I had an expedition with 3/4 ton drive train and it pulled and stopped my 245 loaded to go offshore just fine. I would have never tried to do it in a mountaineer. Now I have a 3/4ton dodge diesel and cant be happier. Granted your boat is smaller and weighs less I would say it is up to the task of 3000 lbs but I would not go any smaller for sure. Step up if anything. Just wait until you have to make an emergency stop some time while on a down hill slope.

I now tow my 222 with a 2001 F150 Super crew 4X4 V8. Towing is no problem.
I used to use a 1998 Ford Ranger 4 liter, 2 wheel drive. It was difficult pulling up the ramp. I would not recommend it for regular use.
