Gas tank is shot in '86 200 Osprey
« on: October 22, 2008, 08:28:41 PM »
Put the boat in the water and checked the bildge.  Full of gas.  Drained and flushed so now there is no gas in the bildge

So right now i'm running a 20gal poly tank in the back of the boat.

I was hoping to slowly start fixing up and repowering this boat but now i'm not so sure.

How much of a hassle would it be to install a new tank?  I'd hate to get rid of this boat because it still is solid.  How much would a new tank cost?  I think it's 40gallons or so.

It needs new wiring, new guages, obviously a new fuel tank, and re-powered with a newer 115hp of some variety.  The upside is that the '85 150 mariner still starts and runs like a champ.  BUT it sucks gas and oil like crazy.  And of course it's insanely loud and smokey.  So pretty much an old two stroke.

So I guess i'm wondering is it worth it to fix this boat up or just find mine next new to me boat that doesn't have these issues?

Thanks in advance.

CT, does your Osprey have the tank hatch in the sole?  If so, tank replacement take some elbow grease but is easy.   No special skills required.

Yeah, it's not too bad.  I had to pull mine out to clean it when I first got my Aquasport, and I discovered it was cracked.  A buddy of mine that welds aluminum fixed it up for me and pressure tested it, now its fine.  I don't know how much something like that costs, but it was free for me using the southern good ole' boy bartering system

So how do I find the deminsions of my tank so that I can have the new one to drop in place when I take the old one out?

Are there spec sheets some where?

Obviously it'll be an aluminum tank.

CT, I ordered my tank from these guys. http://www.speedytanks.com/repairs/index.html It is tested and ready to install on delivery.  You can see it in my photo gallery below.

I would suggest pulling the cover and measuring it yourself.  Speedy Tanks has a form for you to fill out.  I believe all the AS factory tanks were just rectangular designs and not "belly" tanks.  You will also need the dimensions of the fill, vent and supply fittings.

Also, I recommend reading this article http://marinesurvey.com/yacht/fueltank.htm so that your new tank will last forever.

The problem is that the boat is sitting in dry storage.  I don't even have a trailor for it.  I'd be doing this with the boat either in the water or more than likely on a boat lift.

Damn.  This is gonna screw me I think.

I am getting ready to do the very same thing to my 1990 200 Osprey; maybe as soon as the next week or so. I have been running a 6 Gal nurse tank all summer ( and also carry 2 X 5 gal cans onboard ).

I have alot of sludge and oxidation buildup in the bottom of my tank. I am hoping to pull the tank, and either:

1) Clean it out ( maybe have it boiled out at the radiator shop ) and recoat the insides with that epoxy coating stuff that is made for car and motorcycle restoration.

-OR

2) Have a custom tank fabricated if it is absolutely necessary.

Question : Does anybody know if the tank on my 1990 Osprey 200 is foamed in or something ? Lordy, I hope not.

It is probably strapped in with flotation foam filling the gap around the sides and ends.  Dig out the foam (and leave it out) then remove the clamping bolts.  Search the forum for similar threads and you will see how others got their tanks out.  The are some good ideas how using mesh straps and jacks.

Hah rebelyell I'm in the same boat as you (pun intended)

My 22-2 tank has lots of sludge thats clogging it and I need to remove it. The tank is strapped down with metal straps and filled along the sides with god-awful annoying foam. Going to dig and lift as soon as I decide what to do with your tank

So is there no way of finding out ahead of time what size the tank is without openning it up?

Guys,
Talked to Wellcraft/AS customer service this afternoon in regards to cthomps (Craig) tank dimensions, and, yes, they had them.  Going to see if Moeller can still "resurrect" his original tank.  So it's good that CS still has the drawings, plus it was fun to see what's going on with the old plant.  I work with one of our hardware reps who is a good friend of mine and reps Moeller.

Now, if your looking to replace aluminum with the same, your looking at Florida Marine Tanks.  Contact them and they can fab you one to the original dimensions.

BTW, Wellcraft/AS cust serv. number is (941) 753-7811.  Use them, they'll be glad to help.

86 Osprey tank

I think the 86 Osprey 200 has a 55 gallon tank - check with Phil at Alloy Metal works and see if he has built one and still has the specs.

Good luck!

Cap'n John,
Craig's tank may very well be aluminum as his '86 was built pre-Genmar.  Most likely when Genmar acquired AS, they switched over to poly tanks to cut the cost down.  The Tank dim.'s that Wellcraft/AS customer service gave me were for a '90, which was most likely the same boat.  Hell, we were still building 200s when I left in '00, and they hadn't changed a bit from '94.

Mine is a 1990 Osprey 200 and has a stock 45 gallon tank.

Sometime ago on here somebody posted a Excel spreadsheet with most of the specs on Aquasport boats (weight, gas tank capacities, engine capacities, etc)... maybe somebody could resurrect that post....

I am still wondering if my tank is foamed in; I would sure like to know before pulling my console and hatch.... 8)
