My new project - 1977 22-2

Let the fun begin.  Ultimately, I'd like the exact same setup as Frank Chunn's 22-2.  Does anyone know what kind of performance he's getting with the 150 Yamaha?  I just got rid of one of those on my last boat and was very impressed with performance / economy - wondering how well it does on a larger boat.  Also, to acheive the level of refurbishing he did, what kind of budget does that require (excluding motor)?

I think if you saw the floor / console / transom / motor you'd think differently.  Thanks for the compliment though - not bad for $5k b/m/t.

Forgot to log in...anyway, I noticed that the FL numbers are the same as my last boat 9026!  Looking forward to running her as is and when she gets a face lift and new power.

The hull looks in great shape - kept out of the water/on a trailer so nothing to do to the bottom.  Seeya on the bay. 8)

Apeggs, your 77 is nice looking.  It looks just like my 73' I just recently purchased.  Like you my floor/console/transom does not look like the hull.  (I will try to scan pics soon and post) I think we are both looking to do the same thing.  However, I am planning to repower with a 200 hpdi.  You can get more horsepower with the same weight as the Honda 4 150.

I owned a Yam F150 on my last boat - being only 4 cylinders, it seemed like it sipped fuel and had similar torque as the HPDI and V-Max - and was quiet and smooth.

The E-Tecs are very interesting to me too - mostly because I don't have to worry about a maintenance schedule @ $300/piece with the four strokes and the (former) 7 year full warranty you get with the Evinrudes (among other things).  

I'll wait til the Black Bomb that's tied to the transom of my '77 takes a complete dump before I repower and do fiberglass work.  Gives me time to research.

Good luck with your '73 - post some pictures and keep me posted if you have any work done to it.

I don't know about fuel economy, but Chunn is topping out at about 45mph.

45 mph is very respectable - especially with that tower.  And I would think that in any circumstance, 4 cylinders is better than 6 when it comes to fuel economy - maybe I'm wrong.

Hi APeggs,

You keep mentioning that the 150 Yammy is 4 cylinders.  Not so, it's 6.  The 4 cylinder is 130 Hp.  Have owned several of each.  The 150 and 200 are basically the same motor with different carbs on the older mods.  Not sure what the newer ones change to go from 150 to 200 but both definitely have 6 cylinders.  Hey, that's a great looking hull.  A 150 yammy would push it just fine.  Just make sure you have hydrolic steering or hold onto wheel when you shove the throttle foward.  For that matter tell anyone else in the boat to hold on when you shove the throttle foward.  I had a 76 -222 with 150 Yammy for awhile and loved it.  Plenty of HP and pretty good on fuel.

Sorry Keith - I may not have specified that the Yamaha 150 I had was the four stroke - it is indeed a 4 cylinder motor.  



This would be my ideal layout - definitely enclosing the transom and puting the motor on a bracket - tower to come later on.

Did this 22-2 that you took pics of in Boca Grande have an enclosed transom or just raised the the 25" mark?  I love this boat.

I don't thinkthe transom was enclosed - doesn't look like he's got any kind of aux. bracket.  Probably just raised to the 25" level.
