CCP question
« on: August 27, 2008, 09:52:45 AM »
I was having trouble shifting one engine and the other would only give 4500 RPM.

I replaced all four cables and adjusted the throttle linkage and now both engines give me 5500.

I saw 44 knots before I throttled back.  Is this normal for a 250 CCP with twin 150's on a bracket???

44 knots seems alot faster on a boat......................

Hey Doc,

Looks normal to me.  I had a 281 osprey with twin 150 Yamaha's and it would do nearly 50 MPH.  It was a bigger boat and heavier than yours but less of a deep v. I would expect your boat to be in the 42 -50MPH  range also, possibly more.

Doc - I think you are approaching RPM-limited speed.  Although those 150s will run 6000 RPM, you usually want to be in the lower 5000 range at WOT and top speed.  Also, is 44 and 5500 fully trimmed out, or are the motors still tucked in?  If 44 and 5500 is fully trimmed out, I think you are about where you want to be...

You may want to think about a re-prop to get the RPMs down a bit and increase top end speed.  I would guess you are running 19s now - maybe you would try a set of 21s for more speed.  If the hole shot is OK, you will also usually run better fuel economy with the 21 vs. 19.  Lots of 21 Merc props in RH and LH on eBay - and some dealers are closing them out this time of year:

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dl ... 26fsoo%3D2

And you are right - 44 on a deep-V center console boat does feel fast - with that wind in your face and all.  I was on a guy's bass boat several years ago that would run 80+       Scared the $%#@ out of me!

Hope this helps - good luck!

i was not trimmed.  I did run the tabs up as i was accelerating.  The engines were still down however.  I was on the river and i had to slow her down before I could play with it.
I usually run it at a bout 3500 RPM and 26 knots--seems happy there and a nice ride.

Sounds like you are running 19 props, right?

A new set of props can set you back some serious bucks.  If you could get someone to let you borrow a set of 21s, it would be interesting to try them out on your boat.  With 300 Mercury horses on the back, you should be able to run into the upper 40s or low 50s - but your current props are going to over-rev the engines to get there.

I think the V-6 Merc 150s had a max operating RPM of 5500 - but the 175 went to 5800 - that's how they got 175 out of the 150!     A lot of people say the 2 litre (121.9 cu.in.) V-6 Merc will run all day at 6000, but I just don't buy it with the stock rods and pistons.  I had a 'Rude on a hydroplane hull bass boat a few years ago and would run it up to 6200 WOT from time to time, but it was going so fast it would scare you.  I almost never (well rarely   ) ran that thing wide open, but it literally screamed at 6200!

I would check with some marine places and see if anyone has a set of 21 pitch props for a V-6 Merc around - maybe they would let you try them out and take your old ones in trade if they work.     Just don't hit anything with the loaners...

Good luck and see ya on the water!

I dont know.  They are the SS props that were on it.  I'll see if i can find the numbers on the wheels.

I'm sure if i was in the gulf and it was flat calm and I trimmed the engines up I could have got a few more knots.

I will probably never run it at WOT again.   Well, when my son comes down i will and scare the &^%$ out of him too
