Performance question
« on: June 19, 2008, 10:32:01 PM »
I just found this website the other day and have spent some time looking around.  I never knew there was such a classic Aquasport following.  At one point my father-in-law had an early 80's 25' Aquasport and it was a solid boat.  That is about all the firsthand experience I have had with them.  Around here old Whalers and Makos have a cult following and I have long considered a 70's model 19' low profile Whaler Outrage as a potential project boat if the right one ever came along.  Now after finding this site I feel like I have another option.

I saw several of the completed projects as well as found the Hammerhead website and checked that out too.  I have to admit that these are some really sharp boats and appear to be ideal for the areas I fish.  I love the lines and the simplicity of the older 22' Aquasports.  I like the layout potential better than the Whalers and Makos.

What I am interested in is a little performance info.  If I were to take on a 22' Aquasport, either flatback or V I'd for sure want a jackplate or porta bracket and trim tabs.  Probably would power with a 150-200 hp class motor.

For those with similar setups what is the draft at rest?  How much water does it take you to get up?  What's the top speed?

For those with overhauled boats how do they hold up when painted?  How does the painted finish compare to factory gel coat?  I have read the merits of both and I know paint can be touched up and redone easily but how durable is it?

Thanks guys!
Life\'s too short to run an ugly boat.

My 86 222XF is about as original as you can get.  Full of fuel (85 gal), 4 dive tanks, cooler full and average gear, I get around 35-38mph.  Best cruising speed on plane is around 25-28.  Top speed mostly empty is 42+.  Fuel consumption is around 3.5 mpg.  I have factory bennett trim tabs with the original 175 Yamaha and it gets up on plane in about 5 seconds with tabs all the way down.  I could use a bit more top speed, but I remind myself how heavy these older models were built and it's a nice trade off.  I thought about re-powering with a 225, but I think I'll wait till gas comes back down to $1.50 a gallon.
If there\'s one thing in my life that\'s missing....it\'s the time I spend alone....sailing on the cool and clear blue water....
